At its center, Roma artists bring inherited forms of material knowledge into dialogue with sculpture, performance, narrative, and installation, mobilizing craft as a living, evolving language through which memory, identity, and material histories are continuously reconfigured.

Through the ancient art of the Paramiśar, Rašid Nikolić transforms stories into acts of resistance, giving voice to the lived experiences, struggles, and aspirations of the Roma people.
Rooted in oral tradition, puppetry, and family heritage, his work carries forward a culture sustained across generations through storytelling, music, and movement.
Fragments of the Paramiśar’s world are presented at ERIAC's Art Space in Berlin, as part of the group exhibition Yesterday is Tomorrow, on view until 24 July 2026.

The European Roma Institute for Arts and Culture expresses its profound sorrow at the passing of Mr. Dumitru Miclescu on 15 May, at the age of 92.
Mr. Miclescu was a Roma Holocaust survivor from Romania and a dedicated advocate for remembrance and historical recognition.
In 2025, he became the first Roma Holocaust survivor from Romania to address the United Nations General Assembly, sharing his testimony on behalf of countless Roma victims of persecution and genocide.
His courage, memory, and commitment to educating younger generations will remain an enduring legacy.
We honor his memory and extend our deepest condolences to his family, community, and all those touched by his life and testimony.

The ideologies behind Europe’s darkest century have not disappeared, they mutated. That is why May 16 matters: it reminds us of the courage of Roma who stood up for justice and humanity against unimaginable evil.
What May 16 demands of us is not only memory, but architecture: the laws, institutions, and economic foundations that make exclusion impossible to sustain.
Building resilient communities means defending dignity, participation, and human rights in the present and future.
Today, we remember the May 16 uprising while recognising what political survival for Roma in Europe now requires: not only remembrance, but organisation; not only visibility, but power.

Roma are often misrepresented as silent or passive in history, but our story is one of resistance, survival, and strength.
From centuries of struggle to the uprising at Auschwitz-Birkenau and beyond, Roma resistance is deeply rooted and ongoing.
May 16 is a call to action: to honor and carry forward the legacy of Roma resistance and turn memory into a force for justice, dignity, and recognition.
