๐Ÿ’šThanks to all who joined us on our Love Epping Forest Manifesto Launch Webinar yesterday! It was great to speak to incumbent and prospective candidates, as well as concerned members of the public, about the opportunities the pledges provide for local government to take action and protect Epping Forest for generations to come.

๐ŸŒณOver the next few weeks leading up to the #localelections in London and Essex on 7th May 2026, we are asking candidates to commit to delivering nine pledges over the next four years.

These pledges have come out of our research and extensive engagement work with the Forestโ€™s local #communities. They are all deliverable by local councillors and they centred around three key themes:

๐ŸŒฑProtecting Nature and Wildlife
๐ŸคWorking Together for the Forest
๐ŸฅพKeeping the Forest Safe and Accessible

If you are a candidate in Epping Forest District, Essex County, Waltham Forest, Redbridge, and Newham, please sign-up to these pledges to demonstrate your love for the Forest and its communities.

If you are a resident local to the Forest, please ask your candidates to sign up to these pledges.#LoveEppingForest

๐Ÿ”—To sign up the pledgers online, or to find out more about our #LoveEppingForest awareness campaign, please visit link in bio, or via: tinyurl.com/LoveEppingForest2026

Some information here if you visit #EppingForest this #bankholidayweekend ๐Ÿ˜„๐ŸŒณ

An ancient method of harvesting or lopping wood was by โ€˜pollardingโ€™. The trees were cut six to eight feet from the ground and regularly recut after a number of years (usually 12-18 years). These trees when regularly recut, survived almost indefinitely and eventually could reach a great size and age.

Thousands of these trees are still growing in the Forest today. They are a wonderful example of a harmonious relationship between nature and people, and the importance of protecting these trees for generations to come.

A truly lovely day in the beautiful #EppingForest last week, spending time together and connecting with brilliant local businesses ๐Ÿ’š @attwaterssolicitors@_____portal

We enjoyed a gentle wander around the Easy Access Trail near High Beach, admiring the Forestโ€™s incredible ancient trees and sharing stories of how peopleโ€™s involvement throughout history shaped the Forest we see today.

We also explored how businesses, organisations and local communities can come together to make a real, positive difference - for nature, for people, and for future generations.

If you are a business or organisation that cares about #EppingForest and wants to demonstrate meaningful social value, weโ€™d love to work with you! Please get in touch with us at: admin@efht.org.uk

By partnering with EFHT, you can play a tangible role in helping to preserve and protect this ancient Forest while advancing your CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) and ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) goals and creating lasting community impact.

๐ŸŒณ What do the 2026 local election results mean for Epping Forest?

Epping Forest, owned and managed by City of London Corporation @coleppingforest ,falls within or borders five of the local authorities whose seats were being contested: the London councils of Waltham Forest @lbwalthamforest , Newham @newhamlondon , Redbridge @redbridgecouncil, alongside Epping Forest District @eppingforestdc and Essex County @essex_cc in Essex. These councils each have their own part to play in looking after the Forest and the #communities which it supports.

Over the past two months, weโ€™ve been running #LocalElections awareness campaign โ€” asking candidates signed up to the #LoveEppingForest manifesto and commit to real, practical action to Protect Nature and Wildlife, Work Together for the Forest, and Keep the Forest Safe and Accessible.

โœ… 140+ candidates signed our pledges
โœ… 40 of them are now elected

Across Essex and London, the political picture is shifting โ€” with new majorities, new leadership, and some uncertainty about what comes next. But one thing is clear: there is cross-party support in protecting Epping Forest, and growing recognition of the Forestโ€™s role in #climate, #biodiversity and community #wellbeing

๐Ÿƒ What next?
We will watch with interest as the new administrations continue to choose their leaders and Cabinet members. In the meantime, We have reached out to all elected candidates who have pledged and will continue to reach out to those who havenโ€™t, offering to meet with them to discuss key Forest issues.

Through a committed, collaborative approach we can ensure that #EppingForest is protected now and for generation to come.

You may have heard that one of the greatest threats #EppingForest now faces is #ClimateChange, but how exactly it impacts the Forest?

Our Trustee Abi @forestcowboywho's also an Environmental Educator at @hiveintheforest (formerly Suntrap), recently wrote a blog explaining the impact:

๐ŸŒกHigher summer temperatures and reduced rainfall result in drier, more compacted ground, increasing the risk of drought, and in turn increasing the likelihood and severity of forest fires as there is more dry material (fuel) on the forest floor.

๐Ÿ’ฆConversely, #drought and compaction can prevent rainfall from soaking into the ground, increasing surface runoff and the risk of localised #flooding.Visitors avoiding surface water by venturing off-path could damage the understory of the forest through trampling and compaction, leading to more flooding via a vicious feedback loop.

๐Ÿ›Rising temperatures can also increase the risk of pathogens and disease. For example, the invasive Oak Processionary Moth caterpillars are expanding their range as they favour warmer temperatures.

๐Ÿ  Plans for 68,000 new homes around the Forest over the next 15 years will exacerbate these problems through increased carbon emissions and pollution from vehicular traffic, and damage to the Forest through increased footfall.

To read the full article, and how together we can help protect the irreplaceable Forest for generations to come, please visit link in bio.

๐Ÿฅพ Abi will also lead a #guidedwalk on Tuesday 12th May at 6.30pm at Chingford, looking at trees ranging in age and of different species, where you can also learn about the important roles they play within history and ecosystems. (Guided walks link in bio too)
