Electronic Sound Issue 137 – Magazine + Vinyl Bundle
A quick reminder of our latest edition – many thanks if you’ve ordered it already!
Our latest Electronic Sound cover stars are VINCE CLARKE (Depeche Mode, Yazoo, Erasure), NEIL ARTHUR (Blancmange, Fader) and BENGE (John Foxx & The Maths, Wrangler, Creep Show), collectively known as @doublespeak_uk, and we’re bundling the mag with a limited edition purple vinyl seven-inch single, featuring two tracks from synthpop’s new supergroup.
The A-side is a striking cover of Fad Gadget’s classic ‘Back To Nature’, a dark, electro-industrial gem with hints of Bowie, Eno and JG Ballard. Vince, Neil and Benge have given the song a widescreen makeover without losing its noisy and gnarly sci-fi oddness. Turn the disc over for the gently tumbling and softly glowing ‘Sunset (Instrumental)’. It’s a true synthpop beauty, as seems perfectly fitting for a track that is the first-ever shared writing credit between long-time friends Vince and Neil.

Synthpop supergroup alert! We have a @doublespeak_uk purple vinyl seven-inch bundled with the new issue of Electronic Sound, featuring Vince Clarke, Neil Arthur and Benge’s fabulous reworking of Fad Gadget’s ‘Back To Nature’, plus exclusive instrumental ‘Sunset’.
It’s a perfect snapshot of what makes Doublespeak such an exciting project — vintage analogue textures, impeccable synthpop instincts and three electronic music lifers bang on form. The mag also features our extensive interview with the trio, exploring how the project evolved, the brilliantly eclectic range of songs (ABBA, David Essex, Young Marble Giants and more) they chose to reinterpret for their forthcoming album and the chemistry behind the collaboration.

Our latest Electronic Sound cover stars are VINCE CLARKE, NEIL ARTHUR and BENGE, collectively known as DOUBLESPEAK, and we’re bundling the magazine with a purple vinyl seven-inch featuring two tracks from the new synthpop supergroup. All three members of Doublespeak are electronic music royalty, the long list of great bands they’ve been associated with over the years including Depeche Mode, Yazoo, Erasure, Blancmange, Fader, Wrangler and Creep Show. So it’s no surprise their forthcoming debut album, which sees them reworking a selection of cult and classic tracks, is an analogue synth masterpiece.
Our cover story is an in-depth interview with the trio, who discuss how the project came together, their wide-ranging choice of material – from Thomas Leer & Robert Rental’s ‘Day Breaks Night Heals’ to David Essex’s ‘Rock On’ – and the crucial role of orange-coloured food in the recording process. It’s a hugely entertaining read.
Among our other interviews this issue are LAIBACH, talking about their poppiest album to date, former The Knife man OLOF DREIJER celebrating his solo debut, and SYSTEM 7’s “unapologetic cosmonauts” Steve Hillage and Miquette Giraudy reflecting on their enduring partnership. We also have ambient legend MIXMASTER MORRIS, folktronic charmers HAIKU SALUT, boundary-crashing soundscaper J ZUNZ, fearless drummer/percussionist VALENTINA MAGALETTI and psych-pop troubadour Jim Noir, stepping out in his new guise as THE DOOK. As ever, it’s all top-notch stuff. #electronicsound #vinceclarke #electronicmusic #electronica
Your most expensive record vs your most prized…
Is the priciest record in your collection also the one you’d rescue first in a house fire? In this episode, we dig into the difference between “valuable” (Discogs-style pricing) and “prized” (lasting impact).
• Valuable is market behaviour – prized is personal meaning.
• Pricing can spike for reasons that don’t match your taste.
• A record can be cheap and still be the one that lives in your head.
Share yours: most valuable vs most prized—are they the same?

E is obviously for Eno and Music for Airports, the ground zero of the genre. A better view of the alphabet is on the second image. Can any of you pop pickers work out the rest?
