i’ve always used movement in my cinematography sparingly & very intentionally, so ripping things out of context for “flashy” factor was a particularly painful part of the process

portraits from the road: affection found in two besties’ kitchen 🫶

this summer i was in a big mental rut and so challenged myself to 7 days of solo creative image making! that meant when a location in my day-to-day life suddenly caught my eye each day, i would drop everything to immediately build an image around it (usually with some sort of surreal elements since i love exploring whimsy!)

this was from day 1

it was a great exercise for overcoming distracting self talk. insecurity is the thief of joy!

as everyone posts their year in review recaps and celebrates the wins, just a reminder that it’s okay to have an off year
this one was a doozy for me in ways i’d never have imagined possible. i’m lucky to have many loved ones who lifted me up to help get me through it, and who made me remember again why life can be beautiful ♥️

it’s come to my attention recently that many people in my life have no idea what i do for work as a DP!

for shooting fictional stories as a “director of photography” (DP), most of my work is done in what’s called “pre-production”:
this means working with a director to figure out what story they want to tell, then mapping out exactly what it’s going to take to tell that story, all before anyone even sets foot on a movie set

here are some tools i use—overhead diagrams, shot list spreadsheets, lighting diagrams, and in this case even script coverage that i did in advance—to keep track of what we’ll need on the day to succeed

for this film “not another fairytale”, director @amshu_medapa wanted to tell a 20ish minute story playing out in 1 room with 6 characters during continuous real time (so think similar to that of a play). so we plotted elaborate cinematography to keep the story visually captivating, also enhancing the comedic elements already written into the script!

this also meant tons of careful prep to ensure we’d succeed on our 3 shooting days on a sound stage (hence all this info shown here ☺️)

was super happy with this surreal sequence from indie short film “not another fairytale”! 180° circular dolly move with practical lighting changes during the continuous shot via entirely tungsten units + 1 skypanel, no dmx (it takes a village to pull this off!)
