305 Humboldt St
Depiction of the original exterior of 305 Humboldt St found on the NYC buildings archive. From 1939-41 the WPA took photographs of the majority of buildings across all five boroughs. You can access the photographs here: https://1940s.nyc/ (80’s photos from a similar initiative have been added to many of the addresses).
This house has recently been renovated and its exterior has been covered with dark grey vinyl siding. Soon after I moved into my apartment, the likely 80’s yellow vinyl and pediment cover were stripped off to reveal the house’s beautifully preserved original wooden siding and decorative casings etc. I enjoyed looking at the house’s remarkable original exterior for the few months between when the 80’s siding was stripped and then replaced with the new grey vinyl. The top right two windows have also been cut and combined to make a clerestory window for some reason. The house has recently sold for 3+M.
Here is my memorial to the original and the few months I was lucky enough to see it uncovered and revealed as one of the most beautiful and well-maintained in the neighborhood.
