The California Michelin Guide dropped a new list of restaurants being added to its collection. On Wednesday, May 20, seven Bay Area restaurants made the cut, with 21 restaurants total joining across the state.
In this latest round of guide additions, four San Francisco restaurants were recognized: Turkish wine bar Kitchen Istanbul (@kitchenistanbulsf); Pacific Heights Mexican restaurant Maria Isabel (@mariaisabelsf_); soul food purveyors Minnie Bell’s Soul Movement (@minnie_bells); and Tuscan fine dining spot, Via Aurelia (@viaaureliasf).
Over in Oakland, tofu masterminds Joodooboo (@joodooboo) snagged a spot in the guide, as did Salvadoran favorite Popoca (@popoca.oakland). Meanwhile, Tasting House’s new sister restaurant, Vicinity (@vicinity.california), also landed a nod from the guide for Los Gatos.

Yes, yes, the official start of summer is Sunday, June 21, but here at Eater SF, the true harbinger of the season is the release of the Outside Lands (@outsidelands) food and drink lineup.
Sure, we already know that Charli XCX, The Strokes, and Rüfüs Du Sol headline this year's festival, which runs from Friday, August 7, through Sunday, August 9. That's all fine and good for Brat Summer 2.0, but what of the food?
Here are some of the highlights to look for at this year's festival, and learn more about what to expect in terms of the old-school newcomers and restaurant collabs at the link in the bio.

After less than a year in operation, smash burger spot Hamburger Project closed its Mission District location at 598 Guerrero Street as of Sunday, April 19. Co-owner Tan Truong confirmed the news to Eater SF via text, stating, “We simply weren’t getting the traction needed at that location.”
The closure comes less than a month after the restaurant made unsavory headlines in late March. A photo captured tubes of raw ground beef left outside the restaurant’s door during a heatwave and was subsequently posted to Reddit.
The thread went viral, and the restaurant was forced to respond in a statement on Instagram, noting that the product was “immediately discarded as it was obviously compromised by being on the ground, without proper temperature control.” Truong told the San Francisco Chronicle at the time that staff weren’t present at the restaurant to receive the order, resulting in the delivery driver leaving four packages of raw meat and a jar of mayonnaise outside the door.
The original Divisadero Street location of Hamburger Project remains open, Truong confirms. For the full story, tap the link in our bio.

Over the past year, major cities across the country have been experiencing a steakhouse resurgence — but these aren’t your grandfather’s classic midcentury steakhouses. Chefs are presenting sizzling meats with unique spins, showing off their personalities in sides and throwing in fun elements like Skee-Ball or high-fi speakers. There is one thing they all have in common: Diners can’t seem to get enough of them.

Think steakhouses are all the same?
Our favorite versions across the country are entirely unique, offering experiences that are less about meat and more about distinctive, once-in-a-lifetime vibes. In our slightly off-kilter steakhouse superlatives (our cheeky awards for these mostly untraditional steakhouses), we pay homage to the steakhouse hidden behind a liquor store, the one that serves as hook-up central for boomers, the one hosting gamblers late into the morning, and more.

Would you gather around a communal steakhouse grill to sear your own T-bone?
Distinctly different than Korean barbecue, "grill-your-own" steakhouses emerged in the midcentury across the country, and had some sticking power in California, where a handful of old-school cook-your-own steakhouses and refurbished restaurants are keeping the format going. A Wendy’s-inspired galbi patty melt? Say less. 🤯
“Plateworthy” host Nyesha Arrington (@nyeshajoyce) is in California and on a mission to find the best eats. She seems to be on the right track after trying this patty melt on a croissant bun (!) at Sōhn (@sohn.sf) in San Francisco.

On this episode of “Plateworthy,” host Nyesha Arrington (@nyeshajoyce) takes on San Francisco — and no trip is complete without burritos in the Mission. She checks out some of the best breakfast burritos the city has to offer at Breakfast Little (@breakfastlittle), which are loaded with Tater Tots, bacon, salsa, and more. When they say the salsa is spicy, they mean it. 🤣

A new, all-day diner serving Americana breakfast classics melded with Japanese American food nostalgia is now open in Napa.
George + Kin’s debuts on Sunday, April 12, in Bel Aire Plaza. The restaurant is grounded in East Coast diner culture with a touch of the Japanese American food that co-owner and restaurateur Ben Koenig grew up eating.
It isn’t a take on yōshoku (Western-influenced Japanese cuisine), but rather a traditional American diner experience in the spirit of many modern American diners that have incorporated international cuisines into their menus mirroring the melting pot.
