They're ANOINTED 😂😂
I was given these clothes 8 months ago on my 55th birthday, and I still feel bad about wearing them in the studio 😂😂😂. They're too muchlike a blank canvas.... I guess I'll have to just throw some paint on them at some point 😂😂. #lovemywife

WELLFARE: IN MAMA'S HANDS
This piece marks a pivotal moment in the development of my textile practice, as it was among the first works in which I fully broke away from the traditional canvas plane. It was created as part of a series titled "Reconstruction", where I examined governmental systems that have historically oppressed and marginalized Black communities, reinforcing second-class citizenship.
Welfare is one such system. Despite Black communities representing only a fraction of its users, they have often been mischaracterized as a burden on a program intended to provide support. In this work, I reframe that narrative through the image of a mother’s hands that both nurture and discipline, as a way to shift the meaning of welfare toward care, responsibility, and sustenance.
The piece is layered with symbolism centered on nurturing and support emphasizing forces that have sustained Black communities, even when they have been denied full access to the rights and privileges of “first-class” citizenship
This and the remaining pieces will be on display until this Saturday April 4th at Mason Fine Art in Atlanta. There will be a closing reception for the Mentor Exhibition from 4pm to 8pm. Hope to see you there

The Quiet Part Out Loud
"YN Eugenics" is the title of this bleak image. The concept EUGENICS draws from the belief that some races are biologically inferior and predisposed to undesirable traits.
It is evident this sentiment exists within the confines of the United States (represented by the Red, White and Blue).....but unfortunately this sentiment also exists inside the diaspora. Within our own communities, many young men are labeled "YNs" (Young Niggas), a classification that can set them on a destructive path before they have the chance to prove otherwise.
In this work, the figure representing a YN is stripped down to the bone, only to reveal a structure of gold and iridescent beauty that holds divine potential. At the base of the altar piece, the young man's spirit appears as an astronaut whose abilities are guarded or restrained by the world. That obstruction becomes the misunderstanding the community ultimately perceives.
So the question remains.......Does the world build that boundary around our young men in order to label them YNs and keep us from recognizing their potential?
This work can be viewed at Mason Fine Art in Atlanta GA. @masonfineart

Title: "And the Young N’s Shall Lead Us"
History has a way of sanitizing radical figures once their words are absorbed into the present. Consider leaders such as Harriet Tubman, Athletes like Muhammad Ali, and even Revolutionaries like Malcolm X. It's ironic that America often asks younger, militant members of the Black community why they do not follow the path of Martin Luther King Jr., without acknowledging that his path ultimately led to his assassination.
In this work....Visionary, Activist, and Rebel, Frederick Douglass appears as the historical figure who, judged by present-day standards and rhetoric, might be labeled a “thug” for what he stood for. Because of this, I cannot help but see the young militant brothers and sisters at the street level as contemporary Fredericks and Harriets.....as figures who assert their bold, unapologetic presence within a civilization that continually works to restrict movements.
As Douglass declared in his time:
“The limits of tyrants are prescribed by the endurance of those whom they oppress.”
Give America a century........then they'll allow the YN’s to lead us.......from the past

Hey Good People...if you happen to be in Atlanta this coming Friday, swing through to the City Of Ink 19th Anniversary group show @cityofink . Big thanks to Goldi Gold @goldigold45 for inviting me to be a part of this group of amazing vibrant artists. And big thanks to Miya Bailey @miyabailey for building the foundation that he's built for artists to be cultivated.
The piece I’ve entered speaks to the connection within the diaspora at large, but more specifically to Black men. That subtle nod two brothas exchange when we recognize each other in a space where we didn’t expect to see one another.
That simple nod that says “Sup, bruh” carries more than words. It says: if no one else in this room sees you… I SEE YOU!
It’s an unspoken understanding. Something never formally taught, yet deeply understood
.
That spirit is embodied in my big cousin Nate (“Tiger Nate” to those who know😅). Though he has passed, he is never forgotten. His presence, his energy, his quiet acknowledgment of others lives on. His spirit represents the very concept held within this piece
