In the wake of this year’s @dronenotdrones, I’ve been thinking about why I so deeply love Minneapolis, and how DIY art is an essential practice of community and radical possibility.
I feel like a broken record, but I can never get over how incredible it is the drone happens at all, let alone that it’s happened for eleven years now.
Twenty-eight hours of nonstop music. Fifty-plus musicians. All in service of giant fundraiser, with hundreds and musicians and visual artists and volunteers donating their time.
If you brought the idea of Drone Not Drones to most music venues, you’d be laughed out the door. There’s no profit incentive. It’s completely “impractical” if you look at it from a monetary lens. It feels like it should be impossible.
And yet. It’s kept going – and growing.
Sometimes, I like to think of the drone as a physical object, being passed, sometimes gently, sometimes with force, from one person to the next through the night and into the day. One long chain of hands and ears, connecting from start to finish.
And I can’t help but think about how the networks that make Drone Not Drones possible are the same ones that underly Minneapolis’s efforts of resistance.
You can take that quite literally – after all, folks at the Drone and folks on the front lines of activism is a nearly overlapping Venn diagram.
But on a metaphoric level, I’ve being thinking about how community is a practice. DIY art is one way we practice community. Literally none of this is possible without each other.
This year, most artists didn’t even know the lineup until twenty-four hours beforehand. And still, everyone was ready.
Artists showed up to offer space for mourning. Grief. Consolation. Giving a balm, a prayer, or just chance to lose ourselves in constant noise.
The drone is, maybe, a tiny glimpse into another version of a world.
A world where we trust others to pick up where we leave off and remember how to show up for each other.
A world where we push at the edges of what is possible, and decide to do something differently, together.
Because if we want a world without ICE and drones and war and genocide, we need to start making the impossible possible.

THIS COMING WEEKEND, feb 6-7 is Drone not Drones, an annual 28 hour music event I help with at the Cedar Cultural Center in Minneapolis, that raises money for Doctors Without Borders primarily through ticket sales. We're still doing that.
But this year, things are different. In response to the ongoing Metro Surge that has (and continues to) ravaged our communities in more ways than we can count, we'll be committing ALL MERCH SALES (posters, prints, new shirts, etc) to local MUTUAL AID PROGRAMS here in our community.
IN ADDITION, we're asking any donors who would like to MATCH TICKET SALES FUNDS (at any level) to get in touch.
We already have OVER $6k committed-- the need here is overwhelming, and everything helps. The more we bring in, the more we can spread around (rent/ legal orgs, targeted neighborhoods, etc).
If you or anyone you know would be interested in being a pledge to contribute please msg @iosisdrone on IG or email at iosisdrone@gmail.com with the amount (and whether you'd like it tax deductible) and he'll set you up for your pledge.
Please contribute and share this post if you're able to, every bit helps.

DRONE NOT DRONES - The 11th 28-Hour Drone
Friday, February 6th - Saturday, February 7, 2026/ Doors: 6:00 PM / Show: 7:00 PM
All Ages
Standing with an open floor for lounging
Minneapolis' DRONE NOT DRONES is part benefit concert, part art project, part community event, benefitting Doctors Without Borders.
"Drone music is a minimalist musical style that emphasizes the use of sustained or repeated sounds... It is typically characterized by lengthy audio programs with relatively slight harmonic variations throughout each piece compared to other music."
Be part of a unique experience while supporting a just cause. Come by before work, after work, or both. Bring a pillow/blanket to make yourself comfortable. Spend the night with us.
Artists rotate on and off the stage to create a single uninterrupted 28-hour drone to protest the extrajudicial and immoral drone program and raise money for the victims of the United States military-industrial complex.

We're excited that once again we will have the entire drone broadcast live on KFAI (@kfaifmradio) here in the Twin Cities to listen to when there are things outside The Cedar you need to get done that weekend.
KFAI is seriously the best radio station in town providing truly community radio. I especially am a fan of International Jazz Conspiracy on Wednesday nights. Make sure they are programmed into your car's radio.
Those outside of Twin Cities who can't be with us can pull up the KFAI stream or join us on the DND youtube and Twitch streams (links in bio).

I'm super excited to announce our next LP release for Drone Not Drones. This one is a drone composition based on Hans Cousto's conversions of the moon’s periodic motions to musical frequencies. It is a split with long-time Indiana collaborators Caldwell/Tester. The last time we worked together was for 2017's Embrace You Millions. Fans of that will find something for themselves in these compositions, I am sure.
I don't think I have been prouder of any release I have ever been a part of. The sounds are wonderful, and Mark's art is right on.
I have spent most Mondays for over 4 years trying to find the right sounds to satisfy the muse in me that wants to seduce the moon's energy. I finished one composition and totally scrapped it. The Caldwell/Tester side has been done for a couple years. I thought it was gorgeous and wonderful from day one and inspired me to be better.
As always with Drone Not Drones, we will be donating all profits to Doctors w/o Borders. We are against and disgusted by the United States' continued military involvements.
Check the bio for links to the pre-sale. It's bandcamp Friday so that means it's a great day to pre-order.
We are having a release show at Mirrorlab a week from Saturday (10/12). Mark Tester is coming all the way from Indy.. I will be joined by Michael Gallope and Adam Marx. Mary Hanson Scott and Judith II will also be performing. This will be the soonest you will be able to get the record.
It comes out officially on Thursday, October 17th for the full super moon. Limited to 111 copies.
This is a lot of words, thanks for reading. Over the moon about this release.
