It rained today. I embraced the chill in the air and reached for Mad Flora, a new n/a amaro that makes me yearn for the amalfi coast even though I’ve never been there.
Instead, I’m in Ohio and it’s raining. That’s what Miles Davis’ album ‘Kind of Blue’ is for, and this amaro. I like it because it’s bitter. When I quit drinking 9 years ago there weren’t much options for bitter so I’d typically drink grapefruit juice and tonic water. Now I can have something like this that has a rush of vanilla, baking spice, hints of rhubarb and orange, and I’d feel confident using it in a cocktail or just topping with seltzer.
It’s woman owned, chef driven, and delicious.
I’m sure it’s better on a beach, but I got what I got.

I had just a couple ounces left of both @drinkmadflora and of my favorite Lapsang Souchong tea from @happyearthtea and knew just exactly how I wanted to finish them both—together!
Lapsang Souchong is a black tea that has been smoked so it has a super bold campfire-like aroma that makes for such a fantastic ingredient in a drink. (It might be my favorite ingredient to play with in fact!) Now that I’m out, I’ll need to go see my friends at @happyearthtea for more.
@drinkmadflora has created this really fantastic amaro-like zeroproof spirit with herbs like thyme and gentian root so it has this bittersweet, earthy profile but also a lot of body. I’m been really impressed with stuff and a little bummed that I’m now out.
@dhosspirits makes a fantastic line of zeroproof spirits that I like a lot, but their Orange (which is basically a triple sec) has a wonderfully bright citrus profile that you don’t need much of to have it really stand out. (I *think* my friends over at @altbarroc have this available!)
@allthebitter has a stellar lineup of zero-alcohol bitters nearly everyone in the non-alc space raves about for good reason. For this drink I used their old fashioned aromatic bitters to call out some of the deeper notes in the tea.
Tonic water adds bubbles, but also some quinine to bitter things up dial down any sweet notes from the orange, reminding you with each sip that this is about as mature as you can get for a grown cocktail with ZERO alcohol in it.
This is one of my absolute favorites. Go make it and you’ll see why.
Mad Flora is on the menu @borgonyc in the Ciao for Now! I love this cocktail and think it’s an absolute killer addition to a weekend brunch or an aperitivo hour there.
