Today, and every day, we urge you to think about how and where you spend your money. 68% of what is spent at a small business stays in the community (as opposed to around 40% at chain stores). In a town like ours, that truly matters. Like so many of our neighbors and friends, our NYSEG bills are high and January has been dry (and frosty) so we are unable to close another day this month for the general strike- but we are in agreement with the sentiment behind it. We desperately want and need to see change. What we have witnessed in Minnesota has been profound- watching people being murdered in the streets on our phones is horrific and dystopian but seeing how folks have come together to protect and support each other is incredibly inspiring. We hope to continue being a part of a community that supports our neighbors and strives to make our little corner of the world better. I hope this year that you will consider supporting all the small businesses in the area run by real loving people instead of large corporations which are inherently selfish and uncaring. Use cash whenever you can, today and always. Download @5calls and make daily calls to the politicians that work for us part of your routine. These are just a few habits we can all practice to put our money where our mouths are- but speaking up is great too.
Upstream will be donating a portion of the weekend’s sales to @thenyic which helps to protect and empower immigrants across our beautiful state. Sunshine Colony is planning a fundraiser in early February- stay tuned for more info on that and come hang with like minded folks in our safe space this weekend. <3
