We’re grateful to call The Gentry Building our home.

The oldest building in Downtown Conroe, The Gentry Building has been home to a meat market, a saloon, a barber shop, a restaurant, a bank, Gentry’s Clothing Store, an art gallery, and finally, Fass Brewing.

We feel honored to share a part in the rich history of this building, and the town that surrounds it.

Fass - Alternative Form: Faß (Archaic) - Noun - Pronunciation: /fas/ - Translation:Barrel, Keg, Cask.

All around Southern Germany you can find beer being poured vom fass, from traditional gravity kegs, known as stichfass. The difference between this dispensing method and modern draft beer is the way the beer gets to the glass. When a beer comes out of a draft faucet, the liquid is pushed with gas through a hydraulic system that displaces the liquid in the keg with carbon dioxide, a delicate and temperamental process. However with stichfass dispensing, the barrel is vented at the top to let air in, so the beer can flow out of the faucet naturally. This results in a different level of carbonation and temperature than draft beer, and a beer that is much more “alive” in that no two pours will be the same.

Unlike British cask ales, these stichfass are filled with beer (typically lager unless in Cologne or Düsseldorf) that is fully carbonated and ready to drink, they do not undergo a secondary refermentation. Occasionally in certain regions these stichfass will be filled with Ungespundet beer, similar to kellerbier in that the stitchfass is filled with a young lager and allowed to mature inside the barrel.

We’re proud to be able to bring this traditional method of serving beer to our corner of the world, and even more proud to bear the name Fass.

Celebrate Father’s Day Weekend in Downtown Conroe.

On Saturday the 20th, our neighboring businesses will be hosting beer tastings from local breweries (including yours truly) along with a raffle. Then on Sunday the 21st, come back to the taproom and buy Dad’s first beer, and his second one is on us.
