I'm looking forward to offering one of the four keynote talks at the upcoming "Digital and Sexual Citizenship in the Age of Social Media bans" conference here in Boorloo/Perth in a few months on 6-8 July.
In my talk "All stick, no carrot? Deploying Australia's social media ban for under16s" I'm taking the opportunity to really reflect on the social media ban and ask not just how has it gone in the first 100 days, but also what lessons could other countries take away from that deployment given the ban looks like it's both an inspiration and a template for many other countries!
Abstracts can still be submitted to the conference (closing next Monday, 11 May), so if you're interested in presenting, get your abstracts in!
The details from @dr__gis ...
Often within the sexuality and youth space there are discussions around balancing important rights for children and young people. The rights to autonomy, as well as digital citizenship and sexual rights: rights to information, expression and agency while balancing these with protection and rights to be free from harm. These can be tricky debates with valid arguments on all ends of the spectrum.
We are discussing these challenges in a short conference coming up entitled "Digital and Sexual Citizenship in the Age of Social Media bans: Interrogating the rights of children and young people" in Boorloo/Perth on 6-8 July.
We also have keynotes from the wonderful Katrina Marson, Megan Lim, Tama Leaver and Alan McKee.
If you think you have a presentation or panel you could get together to add to these debates, we would love to hear from you!
The conference is open to industry, policymakers, educators, academics, and health professionals, those working with young people and young people themselves, so non-traditional abstracts also welcome.

Abstracts close this Monday, May 11th Email the team at: DigitalCitizenship@ecu.edu.au for any questions or queries.

Last year we hosted a panel at @wasworldsexualhealth congress in Brisbane exploring resistances and challenges facing resistances and challenges to Comprehensive S3xuality Education (CSE). We kept these conversations going and wrote a reflective paper! (Link in bio).
We explore how:
✏️ Constructions of childhood innocence (while important to ensure protection) sometimes limit important access to knowledge
✏️ Ongoing global backlash to gender diversity limits information
✏️ Persistent failure to recognise CSE as a human right
✏️How CSE has numerous economic, social and cultural benefit
Discussing these challenges we offer some suggestions moving forward. Keeping these obstacles in mind, can we do better?

Just under two months ago, a number of us gathered across Australia to protest the visiting of president Herzog during an ongoing gen0cide. While this visit was meant to commemorate those who had died in the Bondi attack (valid) it's clear now that this purpose was not the only intent of this visit (worrying).
Very shortly after Ir@n was first attacked, Australia was the first country to throw its support behind these gen0cidal maniacs. VERY close to when this visit occurred. As an Australian, this is such a despicable, shameful and concerning decision 💔 and there was clearly Intel shared during this visit. This march also marked an escalation in violence against protesters, particularly in the Eastern states, all occurring against the backdrop of a royal commission seeking to silence advocates and academics. This is a reminder to remember our freedoms and rights, and to continue to speak out about injustices, wherever we see them.... Particularly given these rights continue to be eroded globally...

✨ New Research ✨
Honoured (and somewhat nervous) to share this paper led by Dr Gemma Hamilton exploring adult victim-survivor experiences of reporting s3xual violence to police in Australia.
My own experience mirrors so many of these individuals, I had a horrendous re-traumatising experience reporting 13 years ago, I thought it was the right thing to do.. (even then I understood the importance of capturing stats, must have always had a somewhat research brain! ). Despite significant cultural shifts occurring since then, we still have such a long way to go. Gemma is leading the way in this space ❤️

I meant to post this last week (whooops). Let's see how well algospeak goes for the new codes.. guessing not great.

Adding my final images from the Invasion Day Rally on Jan 26th in Boorloo/Perth following the threat of a homemade explosive, where recently the perpetrator has been identified and the incident has rightly been characterised as a t3rror15t attack.
There is a (deservedly) deep distrust of police in these spaces and so when the rally was moved on in the interest of "safety" punters reluctantly moved on (or were rather forced to) without much explanation. While often these cases it's understood not to share too much detail to avoid widespread panic, the way this was handled clearly showed there at least needed to be better communication with the organisers or better comms with the public moving forward. This day could have been so much worse but the targeting of a crowd who protest in peace is despicable. Protestors seek justice, acknowledgement and a small change that wouldn't mean everything but it could be the start of better steps taken together.
While we live through multiple gen0cides, it highlights how cruel and disrespectful it is to make an Australia day on a day that marks the commencement of g3noc1de and the erasure of our First Nations people. We can and should collectively do better.

It was not clear to most of those of us who were at the rally on Monday what was going on. We now know there was an attempted attack on the crowd with much still unknown but at the time no reason or explanation was given to the crowd, we were roughly pushed and shoved away from the congregation area.
With heightened racism following the voice referendum, an anti immigration rally occurring nearby and hate speech laws limiting protest recently enacted this left the crowd to speculate and the police acted with force and were rough with particularly mob and elders, some were reveling in being able to assert dominance, it was evident in their eyes and manner. Such an assault on the crowd left most feeling confused and disjointed. However, after some time when the crowd was able to recollect themselves and be directed to continue and March onwards, at points the organisers would stop to regroup and dance. While this happens every year there was something about this year where mob and ally alike danced together in the face of adversity and instead usingjoy and expression as resistance.

There was a strong police presence at the Invasion day rally yesterday. A counter anti immigration rally was held nearby and someone threw something into the crowd later identified to be a handmade (possible) explosive device. The police pushed the crowd back for their safety but were quite aggressive in doing so. Several friends and peers sustained small injuries. All were ok and Mob and allies continued to march 💪🏾 hope everyone ok out there x

AI without consent is not innovation. It’s harm.
Recent reporting shows that some social media is being used to generate and share sexually explicit AI images of real people without consent. These deepfakes violate privacy, dignity and safety, and current laws and platform protections are not keeping up. This isn’t just a tech issue. It’s a human issue and it’s about consent, respect, accountability and human rights in digital spaces. As AI evolves, our laws, policies and social norms must evolve too.
