I carry so much gratitude from 2025. Life is often a long journey into the unknown, but I hope to continue working harder, growing, and building deeper companionship along the way. Wishing each of you love, joy, and happiness in 2026. Happy New Year!

Kara Walker
Unmanned Drone, 2023
156 x 132 x 56 inches
Bronze
via MOCA:
In 2021, The Brick (then known as LAXART) acquired a decommissioned equestrian monument of “Stonewall” Jackson from the city of Charlottesville, Virginia. The monument was deeded to artist and MONUMENTS co-curator Kara Walker to create the new work Unmanned Drone (2023), currently on view at The Brick. The original bronze statue portrayed Jackson spurring his steed into the heat of battle. Walker dissected the statue and reshuffled the parts in a Hieronymous Bosch-like fashion. The result is still horse and rider, but instead of charging into battle, Walker’s horseman wanders in Civil War purgatory, dragging its sword over a ruined battlefield.
Unmanned Drone is presented at The Brick as part of MONUMENTS. A unique collaboration between MOCA The Brick, the exhibition responds to fundamental and ongoing histories of the post-Civil War United States.
