Last month we went to see "The Magical World of Joan Danziger" exhibit at American University. We had the 5-year old twins with us, so we raced through. The documentary about her life's work was part of the DC International Filmfest. Danzinger is a DC based artist in her 90s. My mother (also in her 90s) had gone a few days earlier when the artist happened to be there, so they met and talked about her artwork.
Her work is whimsical. On through May 17. Read about the exhibit here: https://www.american.edu/cas/museum/2026/danziger-magical-world.cfm

Two weeks ago we went to see Chez Joey at the @arenastage.
It was a memorable production -- with the sound of the tap dancing an integral part of the orchestra. Hats off and appreciation to @the_savionglover and everyone involved with the show.
It was sooo good I would see it again.

Tonight Marco and I saw two extraordinary documentaries from the VS Goliath series -- one on Appalachia and one on Greater Chaco -- at the @dceff_org.
Highly recommended. Check out the @vsgoliath series, produced by @tikkunolamfilms https://www.tikkunolamproductions.com/vs-goliath

Marco and I enjoyed “The World to Come” at Woolly Mammoth Theater. (A picture of the world that is already at our doorstep.)
The actors, script, and stage design were all phenomenal. Hats off to Claudia J. Arenas, Ro Boddie (@roboddieart), Brigid Cleary, Naomi Jacobson (@naomijactive), and Michael Russotto.
An added treat was seeing Fe Miranda just before the show began -- where they are working as assistant stage manager.

Lush at Fashion Center in Pentagon City hosted a Black History Month event on Saturday, January 21. Store manager Derrell Johnson spoke about the Lush “Give Them Their Flowers” campaign, the store’s theme of “Tend to Our Roots,” and Lush’s collaboration with the Zinn Education Project. We had a ZEP table and I spoke briefly about the Zinn Education Project resources and reach. Store staff spoke about what Black History Month means to them and Derrell invited attendees to share their thoughts as well. The program concluded with interactive activities including making flower bouquets and bath bombs.

Despite the cold weather and still icy streets, it was a standing room only crowd (about 80 people!) last night for Ana Patricia Rodríguez with her new book “Avocado Dreams.”

Janeese Lewis George is the candidate we need for Mayor in DC. On Friday evening, she spoke at a large gathering at @setaoasis on Georgia Avenue. She addressed how we need to fight back — prioritizing the rights of the people here in the city. She spoke about the cost of childcare, the fascist federal government, ICE raids, housing, and more.

Last Tuesday, the Critical Exposure board hosted a community social hour at The Roost. Good turnout and lovely event, despite the weather. @criticalexposure

Catching up on posts again. This one from a beautiful gathering with Victor Olano and Ryan Monroe. Met the mayor of Brentwood and learned about the history of North and South Brentwood — and the sculpture to replace the Jim Crow barrier.

If you are in or near DC before March 1, don’t miss “the stars we do not see.” Australian Indigenous art. Before British colonization in 18th century there were 600 Indigenous nations 250 different language groups in what is now called Australia. The art and the stories make an impression.
