Whenever I start a new play, I always ask: Why now? And honestly… every time I turn on the news, I’m reminded just how timely Sally & Tom is.
We’ve just entered week 3 of rehearsal, and we are digging deep. Excavating the bones and marrow of our history. Black history in America. The unfulfilled promises. The resilience that still isn’t fully seen, honored, or loved the way it deserves.
As we approach the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, this play asks us to lean in and confront the contradictions of Thomas Jefferson and his relationship to Sally Hemings. His “servant,” his “mistress,” his “concubine,” his property.

Both shows have just been recognized in The Washington Post’s Top 10 plays of 2025. I’m so honored to have shared the space with such immensely talented artists, who’ve become family. The first time I played MLK was in a fabulous play called Blueprints to Freedom by Michael Benjamin Washington. I would’ve never imagined that over the next 10 years, I would portray him 3 more times!
The American Five by Chess Jakobs, and directed by Aaron Posner, will start its world premiere run this Friday at Ford’s Theatre in Washington, DC. Today was the first day of rehearsal for what I know is going to be a magical experience. For the ensemble, the creative team and most importantly…for you the audience. Couldn’t be more thrilled to tell this story, about these Black people at this time in our country. Dominique Morisseau’s Paradise Blue is set in 1949, but the story is just as timely and urgent as ever. Directed by the incredible Raymond O. Caldwell, this show is one you don’t want to miss.
