Sam’s journey into hospitality began with his passion for coffee. He joined @grind just as they opened site #3 - and ended up opening 10 more, along with their first (and second) roastery. During this time, Sam fell in love with the Spirits category, which sparked a shift from Head of Coffee to Head of Beverage Training & Development. In 2018, Sam helped launch Discarded at Grind, and three years later he came the Global Brand Ambassador.

Delving into his role, Sam shared, “I am so lucky to be the face & voice of the brand, bringing it to life for Bartenders and Consumers. Globally, it’s a small team, which means I am involved in everything - strategy, advocacy, and execution. As a small and growing brand, we need to land that Discarded tastes amazing and, more importantly, what makes us different - Creatively Reusing Waste.”

Speaking on his love for the brand, Sam said, “Discarded is all about flavour, first and foremost - and I love watching people taste it for the first time. But what I really love is what happens next: when they start seeing waste differently. When it clicks that waste can be a creative unlock. At Discarded, we show just how amazing ‘waste’ can taste - and if that sparks a different kind of conversation, even better.”

Looking to the future, Sam shared his goals, “Short-term, it’s about making sure we keep learning - what’s landing, what’s not, and how we can better support the on-trade with the right tools, education, and energy. Long-term, I want to see Discarded becoming the global spirits brand I believe it can be. And maybe changing the way we do advocacy to make sure it’s relevant in 2025 and beyond.”

To conclude, Sam advised, “Hospitality’s is about HUMANS, and the best advice I’ve got is to stay close to that. Community matters - most of what I’ve learned has come from the people around I have met along the way. Stay curious, ask the awkward questions, and remember you’re never too experienced to learn something new.”
