We’re incredibly proud to announce that Different Strokes has been named the Round Table President’s National Charity of the Year for 2026/27.

The partnership was officially launched at the Round Table Great Britain & Ireland AGM as Sheraz Shahid began his presidential year.

Round Table members across the UK and Ireland raise millions for charity every year and contribute thousands of volunteer hours to support communities through their motto: “Do More. Be More.”

Sheraz chose Different Strokes following his own family’s experience with stroke, and after witnessing fellow Round Table member Mike Jewell rebuild his life after having a stroke at just 43.

Together, we want to raise awareness that stroke can happen at any age and ensure younger stroke survivors know they are not alone.

Over the next year, Round Table groups across the UK and Ireland will support Different Strokes through fundraising events, community initiatives and awareness campaigns, helping us continue providing life-changing support to younger stroke survivors and their families.

We are so excited for the year ahead and grateful to Sheraz and the entire Round Table community for choosing to support Different Strokes.

The BASS Project continues to grow, amplify voices and raise awareness of stroke inequalities affecting Black and Asian communities.

This spring, our Ambassadors have been sharing their lived experiences at national conferences, in the media and within communities across the UK. From raising awareness about blood pressure and stroke prevention, to speaking openly about recovery, identity and health inequalities, their voices are helping to drive important conversations forward.

We’ve also welcomed new Ambassador Tia Bryden, strengthened community outreach, attended the Black Health Inequalities Summit, and shared translated resources with South Asian communities at a charity Bhangra fundraiser in London.

New research presented this year highlighted the urgent need for this work, showing that stroke rates remain significantly higher in Black communities, with strokes often happening at a younger age.

At the heart of the BASS Project is lived experience, connection and representation. We’re proud of everything our Ambassadors continue to achieve and excited for what’s ahead.

On Saturday I made my first visit to the @differentstrokesuk Jarrow group and was welcomed with open arms. It was so nice to be able to chat freely and meet such genuinely supportive people.

Today I then visited the Different Strokes team visiting Newcastle, again such a warm  friendly group and I learnt so much from everyone there.

A huge thank you to everyone involved, especially @karlynfoster , Karen and Mark for making me feel so welcome in Jarra. Also to all the people who attended today, @a_stroke_of_good_fortune with the coolest glasses in the North East.

Suffering a stroke at such a young age was something I never expected to experience ❤️‍🩹

But I managed to get out of it stronger and more resilient than ever, something I would have never achieved without the right network around me 💕

That’s why I decided to run this marathon and raise funds for @differentstrokesuk hoping to be able to help anyone who might be going through anything similar ❤️🥰

Any donations, no matter how small, are extremely appreciated xx Please check the link in my bio!

On the 10th May Simon Dalingwater and his colleagues Becky and Dan from Property firm Adair Paxton, ran the Leeds half. They were inspired to run for Different Strokes after their colleague Claire suffered a stroke at 47.
‘Claire has made an incredible recovery for which we are eternally grateful, but we have seen first hand the impact on the patient, their family, friends and colleagues so if we can help others who might find themselves in the same situation then we are pleased to do so.’
The team raised £2020 for which we are extremely grateful for – Thank you

"While the relationship I have with my stroke remains a complicated one, I feel a sense of gratitude whenever it drifts to the forefront of my mind.

Each time, I am reminded that having had such a life-altering experience at a young age has set a precedent for me to tackle any challenge life throws at me.

It has given me a kind of strength I don’t think I could have mustered any other way."

Stroke doesn’t just happen to older people.

A quarter of all strokes in the UK happen to people of working age, and stroke in younger people is rising.

This Stroke Awareness Month, we’ve launched our new free online guide: Stroke Doesn’t Care About Your Age.

The guide covers:
• Spotting the signs of stroke
• Stroke prevention
• The realities of younger stroke
• The higher risks faced by Black and South Asian communities
• The hidden impacts of stroke, including fatigue and memory problems

One of the most dangerous myths we still hear is: “You’re too young to have had a stroke.”

But stroke can happen at any age, and every minute matters.

Read/download the guide online today and help us raise awareness of younger stroke. Visit the link in our bio.

Everything Different Strokes does is funded through donations and fundraising. By supporting us, you help more younger stroke survivors access the support they need.

Together, we can make sure no one faces stroke alone.

Question: what is one piece of advice you would give to someone who has recently had a stroke?

"If you’ve had a stroke, be kind to yourself. It’s going to take time, but the first few months are vital. And you need to want to beat it. You have to want to get better. I am now at the stage where it has been nearly eight months. And I feel like I’ve plateaued. The early months saw rapid progress, and this is the hard bit."

We’re delighted to share that Different Strokes has received funding from The National Lottery Community Fund to help continue our ‘Stroke Survivors Together – Meeting in Support’ project.

This funding will support:
• Our network of local support groups
• Community events across the UK
• Virtual meetings and webinars for stroke survivors

Peer support can make a huge difference after stroke. Whether online or in person, these spaces help survivors connect, share experiences and feel less alone.

A huge thank you to @tnlcommunityfund for supporting younger stroke survivors and helping us continue these vital services over the next 12 months.
