Happy to be launching my puzzle collaboration with @kinstler_co today! My 2022 painting, Tempérance is featured on this puzzle and is available for folks to take home and put together. (Link in bio)
In Tempérance, I portray myself as a winged angel, which in the Pamela Colman Smith deck seems female or androgynous, pouring liquid from one chalice into another. Here the angel is blue, with a golden bejeweled Afro crown of hair and seated with one foot on water and one foot on land, which symbolizes balance between the physical world and the emotional realm.
Words from Kinstler and @wood26son ::
“Shimoyama approaches painting as a form of world-building, riffing on personal experiences, mythology, spiritual traditions, drag culture, classical composition, and queer iconography. His unique visual language supports a wild matrix of media—everything from fur to feathers, glitter, rhinestones, and sequins.
Tempérance is of course a virtue, a reminder to maybe never get too high or too low- to stay kind of chill- but Tempérance the painting, or at least the materials used in it throughout-, the jewels, the glitter et al have precious little chill. And that’s why we love it.
Anyway, enough words. Get this puzzle because it’s awesome! Puzzle link in bio! Grab one!”

“[The body] gave me a container, a boundary to play within…”
Devan Shimoyama’s work considers beauty, glamour, and their illusions alongside ugliness, treating each as a generative force in composition and meaning.
Beginning with figure drawing and expanding through an increasingly multimedia approach, Shimoyama brings together fabrics, beads, and other mixed media to explore how materials coalesce, communicate, and evoke bodily presence. Over time, these investigations became more deliberate, using materials with greater purpose and meaning.
Shaped by the visual language of, and experiences within chapels, churches, nightclubs, and the Queer community, Shimoyama connects adornment, light, and atmosphere as transformative forces capable of elevating both space and body into something luminous, sensual, and transcendent.

Huge thanks to everyone who attended last night’s event presented by the Courtauld Centre for the Art of the Americas ‘Devan Shimoyama in conversation with Alex Bispham and Pia Gottschaller’
Devan Shimoyama is no stranger to excess. The artist crafts his own Black, queer mythology in bright colours and lavishly embellished surfaces. Within his visual lexicon, Shimoyama employs materials like building blocks to construct a space of queer transcendence: glitter, rhinestones, sequins, and fabric.
In his first public talk in the UK, Shimoyama discussed a range of work that weaves together popular culture, mythological archetypes, and personal narrative. Shimoyama’s Barbershop Project invited members of the public to have their hair cut in a joyous space surrounded by paintings of himself, loved ones, and imagined portraits that reframe the hyper-masculine spaces of his youth. His swing sculptures and hoodies are tributes to victims of racialised gun violence and use silk flowers to evoke spontaneous memorials, celebrating life between permanence and impermanence. The Tarot Series reimagines the twenty-two Major Arcana and takes the artist and the viewer on a “Fool’s journey” via the divinatory cards.
These works seek a through-line between spiritual traditions encompassing his Baptist Christian upbringing, hybrid Black diasporic religions, Egyptian mythology, and more. Nods to popular culture suffuse Shimoyama’s fantasy world, from music (the Princess of R&B, Aaliyah), to poetry (the Jamaican writer Safiya Sinclair), to anime (the television series and manga Sailor Moon). Through these references, he transforms sites of pain into spaces of reverence and remembrance. From folklore to fantasy world-building, Shimoyama amplifies Black queer joy.
Organised by Professor Jo Applin, Alex Bispham, and Dr Pia Gottschaller, as part of the Courtauld Centre for the Art of the Americas.

Hey y’all, I am launching a newsletter! ✍🏾Sign up by March 18th at the link in my bio for a chance to win this signed Giclée print of ‘Tempérance’ by me! 🪄✨I’ve been closing in on the final few Major Arcana tarot paintings and thought this would be a great opportunity to find ways to share them with more people, as I’ve always envisioned these works as being turned into something where many folks could live with them. I chose ‘Tempérance’ as the piece to giveaway, as it is a particularly special work in the series as a Sagittarius, reminding me to slow down with intention and find balance while exploring and expanding.
The newsletter is a way for me to communicate directly with you on my upcoming affordable print releases, exhibitions, programs, and projects I have in the works. So please sign up! I really appreciate it, and looking forward to sharing more of what I’ve been working on. Enjoy these process shots from the studio while making this painting. 🎨👨🏾🎨🖼️🐈⬛
