Lortzing reloaded: For 150 years, Albert Lortzing’s comic opera ZAR UND ZIMMERMANN was a perennial favourite in German-speaking opera houses. Then things went quiet around this Rossini-esque comedy of mistaken identity and espionage.

The Berlin-based director Martin G. Berger, who has received numerous prizes and awards, is now changing that and, with his new production, will present the first major German premiere of the work in a long time, starting on 20 June 2026.

For over a quarter of a century, Richard Wagner worked on his “magnum opus”, DER RING DES NIBELUNGEN (The Ring of the Nibelung): from the carefree frolics of the Rhine maidens to the apocalyptic downfall of the gods’ hall, Valhalla, this 15-hour Gesamtkunstwerk sees beginning and end merge into one.

Director Stefan Herheim tells this endless story of the rise and fall of ideas and worldviews for us, driven by a theatrical delight in performance.

In May 2026, we are presenting two cycles of the tetralogy: whilst the complete second series is sold out, tickets are still available for individual performances of the first cycle, which can be booked separately.

Of a man who set out to learn fear: In the third instalment of the RING tetralogy, we meet Siegfried, a superhero as radiant and brimming with power as he is fearless and irreverent, who without further ado forges a sword, uses it to slay the dragon guarding the Ring, puts the Wanderer (aka Wotan) in his place, frees the captive Brünnhilde and wins her for himself. Who or what is to stop him?

SIEGFRIED on 23 May at the Deutsche Oper Berlin – under the musical direction of Sir Donald Runnicles, featuring Clay Hilley, Ya-Chung Huang, Iain Paterson, Michael Sumuel, Tobias Kehrer, Lauren Decker, Elisabeth Teige, soloists from the Boys’ Chorus of the Dortmund Chorus Academy, and the Orchestra of the Deutsche Oper Berlin.

The myth of ‘forever young’ and the longing for longevity preoccupy and drive many people. Yet growing older is not for the faint-hearted.

Composer Asia Ahmetjanova is collaborating with director Franziska Angerer on an installation-based music theatre piece exploring old age, the experience of physical decline, and death as a taboo.

Through a spatial meditation featuring mythological figures, the primal material of clay, and performers, ENDLICH examines how we deal with the ageing process and our relationship with the end.

Following its world premiere on 10 May as part of the Munich Biennale, ENDLICH is coming straight to Berlin, where it will celebrate its premiere on 22 May, with further performances on 26/28/29/30 May 2026. Info and tickets on deutscheoperberlin.de – accessible also via Linktree in bio.

26/27 season – Artists in Residence: We are delighted to welcome Bára Gísladóttir and Fiston Mwanza Mujila, two exceptional artists who, as composer and poet in residence, will be developing programmes for our new UNLIMITED section throughout the season.

The Icelandic artist Bára Gísladóttir is a master of stylistic and genre-bending, and as a recipient of the Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation’s Encouragement Prize and the Carl Nielsen Honorary Prize, she is one of the most sought-after composers of her generation.

The Congolese-Austrian writer Fiston Mwanza Mujila writes novels, poetry and plays; during his residency, he expands the opera house with new linguistic spaces and global perspectives, transforming it into a resonant space of the present.
