With five decades at SNL and an unlimited amount of strategery - a term he coined - Jim Downey is an unsung hero of sketch comedy and I’m so excited to share the film I shot about him. Honored beyond belief to work with @nbcsnl, this project took years, an actual village, many Canadians, and at least 6 feet of distance at all times.

This was my second collaboration with Catherine (@top_salt) and she did an amazing job of steering the literal and metaphorical ships. When it was decided we’d film in LA, my first call was to @brandtrentel - after years of seeing him dealing with all the bullshit the fashion world could throw at him, I figured producing a boat being lit on fire would be a cakewalk.

Shoutout to my camera team, @mikenelsoncamera for flying steadi across that beach with perfect timing, @amarqz for some of the most insane sharps I’ve seen (and dealing with pushing that cart, sorry again) and @sophieeuhh for wrangling my dumb camera kit twice in one week.

Ten days in and it’s already been a hell of a year - but I’m excited to share something I made late in 2019 that finally came out! Here’s the music video I filmed for the talented @graciepotter’s beautiful song, “Release.” This production did a lot with a little, from boats to doppelgängers to lighting things on fire, and I was proud to work with such a hard working and talented team.

This was my second collaboration with Catherine (@top_salt) and she did an amazing job of steering the literal and metaphorical ships. When it was decided we’d film in LA, my first call was to @brandtrentel - after years of seeing him dealing with all the bullshit the fashion world could throw at him, I figured producing a boat being lit on fire would be a cakewalk.

Shoutout to my camera team, @mikenelsoncamera for flying steadi across that beach with perfect timing, @amarqz for some of the most insane sharps I’ve seen (and dealing with pushing that cart, sorry again) and @sophieeuhh for wrangling my dumb camera kit twice in one week.

I sat at his kitchen table, surrounded by hard drives, trying to keep making a living while also making sure he didn’t burn the house down. He plodded in to express his concerns about money for the fifth time that day - and I had some news for him.

I told my father that I had paid off his car loan. The car he had totaled by driving it 55 miles home on a flat tire, mysteriously thinking that was a good idea, not wanting to expend one AAA service call.

And then this photo happened.

My purpose in writing isn’t to invoke sympathy, but rather to raise awareness for something I didn’t really understand until this year. Dementia is often portrayed in media for a joke (i.e. Fred Willard in Space Force). We seclude the demented into their own housing and population. Despite how common it is, many people don’t have direct experience until a direct relation falls victim.

It’s awful to watch someone fall apart on the inside. When a person has defined themselves by the intricacies of their mind, the collapse of that house of cards is confusing to everyone - including the victim. He would still make jokes, and some were great, but he struggled to get out the word for zucchini every time.

Sometimes he was in the depths of his troubles, raging about a printer he had tried to set up for 6 hours but he hadn’t plugged in. Sometimes we would sit on the kitchen floor and speak about what was in our hearts until the wee hours, his points would be shrewd and adroit, and it felt like I was talking to a complete person again. By the next morning, all the conclusions we had arrived at had been scattered to the wind.

As far as I understand, Alzheimer’s is often a pointless diagnosis, because it’s expensive to confirm and completely untreatable. It’s often diagnosed through the elimination of other possible causes — or an autopsy. This will change, with research and time. However, it’s far from pointless to know someone is suffering from dementia because it can be caused by many different things and therefore may be ameliorated.

My dear dad David passed away last night, and he did it in the most remarkable way.

We had been listening to jazz all day - the doctors told me hearing is the last thing to go, so I wanted to delight him however I could.

It felt like it was close to time, so I told him I loved him, and then said that I’d put on Miles to play him out.

So I put on ‘So What’, the song he always used to test his beloved speaker systems with. Anytime he changed anything, any cable, any component, he used it as his reference track. I’ve heard it a thousand times.

I moved the laptop closer to him, stepped out to drink some water, and then sat down next to him and held his hand.

Five seconds later, he took his last breath.

By the end of the song he was gone.

Per usual, he had a wonderfully idiosyncratic style. I’ll miss him terribly.
