Moananuiākea is a piece by Leilehua Lanzilotti that celebrates the 50th anniversary of the Hōkūleʻa Voyage. This historical voyage was the first time in more than 600 years that a Polynesian voyaging canoe sailed from Hawaiʻi to Tahiti using traditional non-instrument navigation, the ancestral art of wayfinding that had been lost in Hawaiʻi for hundreds of years.

Del Sol will be premiering the work at the Angel Island Immigration Station as part of our concert series on July 11th. Leading up to the premiere, Leilehua will be gathering folks in Hawai’i for community volunteering events, and we’ll also be doing so in the SF Bay Area. Please check out the full list of activities through our link in bio. Hyeyung and Ben are kicking it off by volunteering at an event hosted by the City of Berkeley cleaning up the shoreline on Saturday, May 16.

We are so excited to share this music with you this Saturday at 2pm at SJSU!

This project has been especially meaningful to me. Getting to bring brand new works to life with the incredible Del Sol Quartet, including world premieres by my friends Erin Busch and Ivette Herryman Rodríguez, has been incredible.

These pieces were commissioned for me by Gabriela Lena Frank and the American Composers Forum, and it feels very touching to finally share them live.

We’re also playing Errollyn Wallen’s stunning All the Blues I See, which you’re hearing in this video and a piece I co-composed with Andrea Gutierrez inspired by the stories of California’s Farmworkers.

All of the music is rhapsodic, vibrant, full of color, energized and we’re totally obsessed! 🤩
