Tahlia and Troy recently visited Napranum and Mapoon in Cape York, alongside architects and friends Luke and Gen from @deickerichards, to hear from community exactly how to shape their own place-based housing design guidelines.

These beautiful communities share the same climate and many family connections, yet each has its own unique character. Having the opportunity to unpack what makes them distinct is exactly the kind of nuance that shapes better housing design.

It's this kind of community work, done alongside skilled collaborators like Deicke Richards, that ensures design is the best that it can be, grounded in place, the people it serves and the culture it supports.

Next week, the team will be head back up to continue these conversations with community. We can't wait to share more as it unfolds.

Gen and Luke have been lucky to spend time recently working in Napranum and Mapoon in Far North Queensland with our friends at Blaklash, developing housing design guidelines for and in consultation with the community.

We are looking forward to our next round of engagement next month and to continuing to develop the guidelines to ensure community gets housing that is responsive to their culture, climate, and needs.

We acknowledge the traditional owners of Napranum, the Anathangayth, Alngith, Peppan, Thanakwithi, Wathyn and Wik Waya people, and of Mapoon, the Tjungundji, Yupungathi, Taepadhighi, Mbakwithi, Thankakwithi and Anathangay people.

It’s a privilege to be able to work on this beautiful country and to be able to work alongside the community.

Deicke Richards is currently working with IRT Group on the Wattleview Moruya intergenerational living community in Moruya, New South Wales. The design for the site master plan is a collaboration with Breathe Architecture, Deicke Richards, Jane Irwin Landscape Architecture, Marchese Partners/Life3A, Wetherill Architects, Ethos Urban/Colliers Urban Planning, Balarinji, WSP, and Artazan Property Group (APG) Project Managers.

Deicke Richards are leading the design for the residential aged care building within the community. The building adopts the small household model of aged care, incorporating six households of 15 residents in a small-scale, domestic environment. Arranged across two to three storeys, the building will include community spaces on the ground floor that encourages connection and support wellbeing.

Our work at Moruya is focused on redefining aged-care design in a regional context. Rather than a single large facility, the six households create a neighbourhood-like environment where residents can experience autonomy, familiarity, and comfort. The design draws on the new national aged-care design guidelines, which advocate for smaller-scale households that feel like home and support consistent care teams.

Good work is better with good people.

Earlier this month we shared a brekky BBQ with Phorm Architecture + Design and Deicke Richards (@deickerichards), three studios brought together through housing projects across communities in Queensland.

We couldn't ask for a better crew to be doing this work with.

At the heart of the refurbishment project we've been working on for All Hallows' School at 501 Ann Street is a new pedestrian bridge that reconnects the site to the main campus of the school across Dodge Lane.

The pedestrian bridge will be known as Jagera Walk, honouring the traditional owners of the land it is built on, the Turbal and Jagera people.

We are very excited that the bridge was recently installed!

The first structural segment was lifted into place using a large mobile crane, forming the primary link between the two buildings, with the remaining sections installed shortly after.

As seen in the render (first image), the exterior of the bridge will depict magnolia imagery and the school's logo.

We look forward to sharing more as the final elements come together.
