Join @cinea_be and @decinema_ in early July for ZOMERFILMCOLLEGE 2026: a week of in-depth lectures by internationally renowned critics and academics, Q&As with filmmakers, and screenings of both original 35mm copies and recent digital restorations!

This 31st (!) edition features two diverse programme strands. HEARTS OF THE WORLD: GLOBAL FLOWS OF MELODRAMA, presented in collaboration with the University of Antwerp, and demonstrates how melodrama’s versatility allowed it to travel the world. With lectures by Professor Ben Singer (University of Wisconsin, Madison) and Dr. Viola Shafik (freelance filmmaker/lecturer/researcher).

In CINEMA OF POETRY: TEXTURE AND MOOD IN NARRATIVE FILM, we look for the elusive qualities—mystery, mood, texture, sensuality, etc.—that constitute ‘the poetic’ in narrative film. Guest speakers include ZFC habitués and film critics Adrian Martin and Cristina Álvarez López.

🎭 Op woensdag 3 juni presenteren we Soirée Burez, een exclusieve avond waarin de Antwerpse broers Jens Burez (set designer en videograaf) en Athos Burez (fotograaf en kunstenaar) hun cinematografisch universum openen voor het publiek. Als art directors ontwikkelen ze samen een uitgesproken visuele taal op het snijvlak van film, opera en beeldende kunst. Hun eerdere transformatie van De Foyer van Cinema 2, geïnspireerd door David Lynch, CABIRIA en Nicolas Winding Refn, vormt de context voor deze avond.

Ze zullen dit doen met AMADEUS (1984), een exuberant kostuumdrama dat breekt met de klassieke biopic. De film ontvouwt zich als een scherp portret van jaloezie, obsessie en genialiteit door het leven van Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart te vertellen via zijn rivaal Antonio Salieri. Mozart verschijnt niet als verheven genie, maar als grillige, bijna punkachtige outsider.

Na de vertoning op 3 juni volgt een feestelijke receptie en de inauguratie van de foyer, die ze zelf ontwierpen, als moment om de samenwerking tussen de broers Burez en De Cinema te vieren.

📼 VIDEO/TAKE, a brand-new joint series by De Cinema and M HKA, transfers video art and artist moving image works from the small to the big screen.

For this first installment during Antwerp Art Weekend, graphic designer Jelle Jespers will present a selection of Belgian and Argentine video works that were shown in Antwerp fifty years ago. Now presented on the big screen for the first time, VIDEO/TAKE #1 features contributions by Jorge Glusberg, González Mir, Alberto Pellegrino, Mirtha Dermisache, Gregorio Klimovsky, Leo Copers, Filip Francis, Pierre Courtois, Hubert Van Es, Lili Dujourie, Roger Steylaerts, and Chris Goyvaerts.

🎶 𝘔𝘦𝘵𝘳𝘰𝘱𝘰𝘭𝘪𝘴 meets 𝘕𝘰𝘴𝘧𝘦𝘳𝘢𝘵𝘶: in Garin Nugroho’s SETAN JAWA (2017), the visual language of German Expressionism is blended with Javanese shadow theatre and mysticism. Filmed in stark black-and-white, this Indonesian take on 𝘍𝘢𝘶𝘴𝘵 is not a retro experiment but a wonderful re-interpretation of silent cinema as a contemporary art form.

This is a unique opportunity to experience this internationally presented work in Antwerp for the first time. For this film concert, leading Javanese singer and composer Peni Candra Rini is joined by musician Indrė Jurgelevičiūtė and by multi-instrumentalist and Prof. Dr. Andy McGraw. Reborn through voice, percussion, and sound, Rini’s new score revitalises gamelan traditions.

In the film, poor mat weaver Setio makes a pact with dark forces to gain wealth so he can marry Asih, a woman from a higher class. But power comes at a price. When his ambition spirals out of control, love becomes a sacrifice…

@micha.volders en @mutropia_ presenteren SǒN met live soundtrack 🎬🎶 SǒN is een kortfilm die documentaire en fictie vermengt en een voormalige Muay Thai-vechter volgt die worstelt met persoonlijke grenzen, familiale druk en zijn plaats in de samenleving.

De SǒN-soundtrack combineert hoekige orkestrale texturen, scherpe en transgressieve percussie met minimalistische patronen en soundscapes. Deze klankwereld wordt live tot leven gebracht door een trio met Tsubasa Hori (percussie, koto, stem), Andrew Claes (saxofoons, fluiten, elektronica) en Micha Volders (elektronica, elektro-akoestische instrumenten) zelf.
