Level 3 Outdoor Leadership Students Take on the Lake District π£ββοΈπ§ββοΈπ #DontJustLearnItLiveIt
Twenty-five of our Level 3 Outdoor Activity Leadership students recently embarked on an unforgettable multi-day expedition across the stunning landscapes of the Lake District, including visits to Borrowdale and Langdale.
More than just an adventure, the trip gave students the opportunity to put leadership skills into practice in real-world environments. Year 2 students led the expedition alongside experienced college staff, supporting and guiding Year 1 learners throughout the experience.
Across the expedition, students took part in a wide range of activities, including:
β
Kayaking
β
Abseiling down waterfalls
β
Gorge walking
β
Mountain biking
β
Hill navigation
β
Rock climbing
β
Overnight camping
A particular highlight was a specialist gorge walking masterclass delivered by staff from Teesside University, giving students valuable insight into technical skills and safety practices.
Evenings were spent reflecting around the campfire, sharing experiences, evaluating performance and strengthening teamwork. π₯
Aaron Brooks from the programme summed it up perfectly:
βIt was a great experience learning how to run a collaborative expedition and applying our leadership skills. It allowed the Year 1 group to develop confidence, safe in the knowledge that they were being monitored closely by the qualified staff and us. By sharing the experience with everyone, we were able to inspire the prospective leaders, showing them the skills we've attained over the past two years.β
This is what Outdoor Leadership is all about - challenging environments, hands-on learning and developing the next generation of confident, capable leaders. πͺ
π Interested in joining the programme in September 2026? Applications are open now, and applicants will also be invited to our Connect 2 College event next month.

A Mixology Masterclass for our Level 2, 3 and 4 Hospitality and Catering students! πΉ #DontJustLearnItLiveIt
On Friday, students headed over to Arvelli in Darlington for a fantastic mocktail and mixology masterclass led by restaurateur Raju.
Having trained at Rockliffe Hall from a young age before progressing to work at Harrods delivering mixology training, Raju now runs his own restaurant, Arvelli, in Darlington. Known for putting his own creative twist on traditional mocktails, he shared valuable insight into the techniques, skills and artistry behind creating standout drinks.
Raju also previously trained former Darlington College student Harold, who went on to work at Harrods himself and has since returned to the College on several occasions to deliver masterclasses to students. π
The session gave learners a brilliant opportunity to develop their industry knowledge and practical skills in a professional hospitality environment.
Raju has also kindly offered to return in the future to deliver a Barista masterclass, another area in which he specialises.
A huge thank you to Raju and the team at @arvelli_darlington for such an engaging and inspiring session. π

During Mental Health Awareness Week, we were privileged to welcome @theanthonyhutton - founder of the Never Throw in the Towel Project, to speak with our Construction and Barbering learners and staff in collaboration with @willmottdixon, represented on the day by Senior Social Value Manager Anthony Dodd π #DontJustLearnItLiveIt
Anthony delivered an honest and engaging session about the pressures young people can face, sharing practical advice, tools and personal experiences to help support positive mental health both now and in the future.
Following the talk, Anthony generously offered learners free haircuts alongside one-to-one chats, creating a relaxed and supportive space for open conversations around wellbeing.
A huge thank you to Anthony for delivering such an impactful session. π
