Three days at The Bungalows — a field journal.
We’re marking the Spring Equinox with a look back at our favourite trip from the past year – a road trip through the High Desert. We stayed at The Bungalows by Homestead Modern, drawn to the mid-century design and quiet connection to the landscape.
There’s something about this time of year that sparks the urge to reset, to plan, to chase the places that call you back. For anyone mapping out their adventures for the year ahead, consider Joshua Tree. A place that pulls you in, again and again.
“In the mountains of California, above the Mojave lies a plateau overlooking the desert, sloping to the East, facing the morning sun, into the West where San Gorgonio’s snow-capped peak reflects the glow of the setting sun… Moved by a sense of the tranquil nobility and eternal beauty of the desert, I have planned, not a city of asphalt, paving and steel, or of tight mechanical grid and congested living barracks [but] a city of the Desert, spacious, free-sweeping; its broad floor carpeted by myriads of desert blossoms; its residents dwelling at peace, and sharing with the soil, sky, and trees, their joy of living, its centuries-old Joshua trees standing like sentinels above its homes.”

Pinching myself that this is now out in the world — @leicauk asked me to share a little about the role my Leica M6 has played in my photography and travels, as part of the continuing story around the launch of the *new* M6 🔴🎞
It's an honour to be a small part of the Leica legacy. My grandfather had a Leica IIIa (from 1936, which I now have), and the M3 played a big role in my discovery of the joy of photography (and film) at a time when most of the world had given up on analogue.
Thank you, Leica, for continuing to support the resurgence of film <3
Many thanks to the lovely team who helped make this video happen:

Italian colors on Phoenix II in medium format, scanned as a positive, then converted with @negativelabpro.
This film has the ability to look like a more established stock, if you take the time to convert it yourself. I’ll share images from this entire roll + comparisons with lab conversions soon.
By cycling through NLP’s ToneProfiles and WB settings, you can see how much range this film has when converted manually — and how much more natural the colors can feel compared with traditional lab conversions.

Harman Azure is a fun, special effect film, though most lab scans don’t show its full potential.
I asked my friends at @analoguewonderland to scan my first test rolls of Azure as positives (e.g. like slide film, so the negative isn’t converted by the scanner), and again as they would normally. Using Negative Lab Pro, I then converted each frame manually — and the results are punchy and stunning.
Same scanner, different conversion 🔥
I’ve also included a few of the scanner conversions (slide 10–12) + unconverted negatives (blue and pink, also very cool) so you can see the difference.
Check out my reel showing the range of tonality using just NLP’s built-in options — film = fun! 🎞️🎉

Harman’s new Azure film, scanned as a positive, then converted with @negativelabpro.
Cycling through ToneProfiles and WB settings shows how much range negative film has when converting it manually — arguably even more important with special effect films like this.

Film + music + Montana in the 1800s… I could get used to this. More BTS from this crazy location to come, it was fun to get the Widelux out on set and to have a few of my Super8 clips make it into the music video.

First of The Roll by @danrubin #firstoftheroll #filmisnotdead #analog #filmphotography #35mm

While scanning a roll of 35mm adapted to medium format last week, I realized I’d not shared a bunch of similarly sprocket-filled panoramic frames from a few days in Joshua Tree near the end of ‘24.
Somehow, this was my first time in Joshua Tree National Park and it did not disappoint. Still thinking about all those textures (and the mountains, always love mountains), might have to swing by again this year on our next CA trip.
And yes, the electric Mustang was a pretty fun ride ✌🏼

While scanning a roll of 35mm adapted to medium format last week, I realized I’d not shared a bunch of similarly sprocket-filled panoramic frames from a few days in Joshua Tree near the end of ‘24.
Somehow, this was my first time in Joshua Tree National Park and it did not disappoint. Still thinking about all those textures (and the mountains, always love mountains), might have to swing by again this year on our next CA trip.
And yes, the electric Mustang was a pretty fun ride ✌🏼

10 frames in Margate last week.
Taking different cameras off the shelf every day this month, a mixture of old favorites (like this) and new additions. A nice way to warm up the eye to start the year.
Kodak Tri-X, Plaubel Makina 670.
Processed with Ilford DD-X in an AGO. Scanned with a VALOI easy120 + Sony A7RII + Sigma Art macro, and converted with Negative Lab Pro.

6/8 — Been under the weather for a few days and haven’t been outside much, so went for a quick walk at sunset to make sure I started the year with some film.
