Have you heard of the term ‘Pareidolia’? It’s the psychological phenomenon of seeing meaningful patterns (especially faces) in random or ambiguous objects, such as clouds, rock formations, or household items. It is a common, non-clinical human tendency caused by the brain’s specialized ability to recognise faces quickly for survival. For current exhibiting artist Daniel Crews-Chubb, controlling a sense of pareidolia has become part of his practice.

Baffled by his father’s ability to solve ‘magic eye’ puzzles/stereograms (with Daniel still yet to solve one to this day), the artist seeks to create his own puzzles - using his frustration towards this inability as a means to create a repurposed, controlled sense of pareidolia. ‘The Belt of Venus’ takes inspiration from a fleeting pink moment before sunrise and sunset - one blink and you miss it, just like a face in a cloud, or a face in Daniel’s paintings.

One of the most distinctive aspects of Daniel’s practice is its complex relationship with art history. The paintings feel deeply familiar, rooted in a tradition that viewers will intuitively recognise, yet they remain entirely fresh, timeless, and surprising. He readily looks to expressive painters like Willem de Kooning and Cecily Brown for inspiration, but he also engages structurally with Cubism. He specifically cites Georges Braque Girl with a Mandolin as a compositional touchstone for this new series. However, his intention is never to replicate a purely Cubist aesthetic, as his own painterly language is vastly more visceral and textured. Instead, he borrows the underlying mechanic of showing a figure as if it is rotating on the canvas, capturing the illusion of movement and allowing the subject to be viewed from multiple directions at once.

Ahead of the 61st Biennale di Venezia we’re delighted to announce ‘The Belt of Venus’: a solo exhibition featuring British painter Daniel Crews-Chubb (@danielcrewschubb), showing at Patricia Low Contemporary Venice.

Daniel Crews-Chubb (b. 1984, Northampton, United Kingdom) is a London-based painter whose energetic mixed-media works grapple with the human condition and the many forms of self-expression. Drawing on and reworking mythological imagery, his paintings evoke a sense of timeless narrative while remaining rooted in the present. His practice nods to Abstract Expressionism, particularly in the gestural, fragmented figuration reminiscent of Willem de Kooning, alongside a playful, improvisatory approach to collage that echoes the layered, sculptural sensibility of Robert Rauschenberg.

In The Belt of Venus, Crews-Chubbs presents a body of 6 paintings which extends the artists pursuit into understanding contemporary landscapes through mythological foundations, looking at pareidolia, perception and the relationship between the two. With its title taking inspiration from the afterglow of sunset, the colour palette draws from pinks and oranges whilst acknowledging mythological and classical forms - reflecting on femininity, fragmentation and the inevitability of decay.
