YOUNG DESIGNERS - Marie Vilay explores how Lao weaving traditions might persist across new geographical, technological and cultural contexts. Rooted in personal histories of migration and informed by field research in Laos, her project To read a pattern investigates what happens when a non-Western craft becomes integrated into European industrial production systems.
Using patterns collected in Laos and adapting them through the industrial looms of the TextielMuseum in Tilburg, Vilay develops a new generation of textile patterns embedded within translucent banner-like installations. Positioned between preservation and transformation, the work opens a dialogue around heritage, cultural identity and belonging.

Knoll unveiled its new Dozie Kanu Table Collection during Salone del Mobile 2026 — a series exploring the tension between counterculture and refinement, humour and restraint, craftsmanship and experimentation.
Drawing from Nigerian craftsmanship and Texan cowboy culture, Kanu introduces floor-length leather fringe, slender steel structures and tactile material contrasts into the Knoll universe, challenging expectations of what the brand can be. The collection reflects a broader shift within Knoll towards embracing contemporary cultural narratives and interdisciplinary creative practices.
“For someone whose parents are Nigerian immigrants, being offered the freedom to experiment at this level is not just symbolic, but tangible,” says Kanu.

DAMN°92 explores Roots of Meaning: how knowledge, memory, and cultural meaning remain embedded in materials, landscapes, rituals, and technologies, and how these relationships continue to shift today. For this issue, Unfold created the Artist Pages, opening the magazine with Liminally Minded: a 48-page exploration of craft, extraction, preservation, automation, and the fragile continuity between ancestral knowledge and contemporary systems.
During the launch, Unfold will screen a selection of short films that form the foundation of their Artist Pages in DAMN°92. Conceived by Unfold and directed by filmmaker and designer Alexandre Humbert, the films move between craft, automation, extraction, memory and material preservation. The programme includes Freeze Frame 82.2, A Combmaker’s Tale and Apagada, exploring the fragile continuity between ancestral knowledge and contemporary technologies.

Liminally Minded / text by Tamar Shafrir
What happens when design de-centres the isolated object and its solid, defined and durable qualities, in favour of the liminal, the passage of time, and the accumulated traces of hands, tools, and rituals? In a world ruled by material commodification, how can such a shift be initiated from within the very discipline that drove modernisation through globalised
manufacture and automation?

DAMN°92 — ROOTS OF MEANING is out now.
This issue explores how meaning remains embedded in materials, landscapes, rituals, technologies, and inherited forms of knowledge — and how these relationships continue to shift today. At a moment when culture feels increasingly detached from place, the issue asks how artists, architects, and designers reconnect stories, matter, and memory to contemporary life.
Featuring Artist Pages by Unfold, alongside conversations and features with Otobong Nkanga, Marguerite Humeau, Smiljan Radić Clarke, Rael San Fratello, d-o-t-s, Hussein Shikha, Isadora Neves Marques and many more.
Not roots as identity.
Roots as entanglement.

Spotted Talent at Milan 2026 - @aya_kawabata_design
At SaloneSatellite, Aya Kawabata presents ‘The Inverted Earth: Fugue for Windows’, a textile-based exploration of rhythm, structure and perception.
Rooted in Japanese textile traditions and informed by musical composition, her work translates principles such as rhythm and temporality into material form. By rejecting repetition, each textile is approached as a singular composition, where structure, color and image are inseparable.
Working across cultures and collaborating with artisans, Kawabata rethinks craft as an evolving system, bridging tradition and contemporary design through layered, spatial textiles.

Developed from a self-made biodegradable material derived from seaweed, the work explores how sustainable materials can exist not as environmental substitutes, but as compelling materials with their own aesthetic identity.
Inspired by the baramgil of traditional Korean architecture, overlapping linear structures allow the gaze to pass through the installation, creating a layered spatial experience within a confined space.
Balancing material research, tradition and contemporary form, ‘Slow2’ reinterprets Korean spatial philosophy through light and perception.

Spotted Talent at Milan 2026 - @by.yixian.wang
At SaloneSatellite, Yixian Wang presents ‘The Foggy Collection’, exploring the transformation of material from textile to glass.
Crocheted fibreglass fabric is kiln-fired into rigid glass, preserving its lightness and delicate structure without the use of resin. The resulting forms remain airy and translucent, capturing light like mist.
Suspended between softness and solidity, textile and glass, the work reveals a subtle balance between material transformation and fragility.

Spotted Talent at Milan 2026 - @prange.maxime
At Alcova, Maxime Prangé presents ‘Washi No Akari’ within a site-specific installation, exploring light as a threshold between interior and exterior, day and night.
Working with washi paper and walnut, his pieces draw from Japanese architectural and spiritual references, where light becomes a medium to shape atmosphere and perception.
Rather than functioning as objects alone, the works create luminous landscapes, translating subtle emotional states into spatial experiences.
Positioned between installation and lighting design, Prangé’s practice turns light into a material that structures both space and sensation.
