Part two of my story with @thomashayo if you missed missed the first part check the post before.
„… Nevertheless, I agreed to meet him the next day in my ofice. And what happened there was quite unusual.
Already after examining the first few prints of his - at the time still slim - portfolio, it became obvious to me that I was not looking at some naive dreamer whose ambition to become a big photographer would never materialize. Instead, I was looking at a truly unique and raw talent whose visual vocabulary and intellectual approach towards his subject matters vastly surpassed his young age! So, all of a sudden, instead of looking for slightly clichéd motivational words and standard advice to better the work, I found myself looking through my address book for contacts of fellow creative directors, magazine editors and photography agents. And that same day, I began to make calls and to write emails. All of them began with the same sentence: ‚There’s this photographer whose work I just saw. Now, admittedly, he is young and just starting out but I think he’s truly special. You have to meet him! His name is Cyrill Matter...“

Quite early in my career I went to NYC to find an agent, extend my porfolio and gain experience. On of the first people who supported me, quite by accident as you will read on the text below, was @thomashayo
Thank you for everything Thomas!
I photographed him in his home and studio at the bowery.
The following lines he wrote for my book „Chapter one“
„It seemed like a usual day in the neighborhood. I was sitting at Café Select, one of my favorite spots, having lunch with my dear colleague and friend Claudia Jaeh, as a typical New York thing happened. Out of the blue, we found ourselves chatting with two people at our neighboring table. Seemingly random encounters such as these are what I love most about this city. As it turned out, both of them were Swiss, both of them in town to pursue their dream of making it in our industry.
In her case as a model, in his as a photographer.
Our exchange deepened quickly and he eventually asked me if I’d be open to have a look at his work and give my opinion. On the one hand, this made me curi-ous, on the other, though, it made me slightly worried.
The main reason for this is that this happens to me a lot: someone new in town, dreaming of being a photographer, wanting to show me their work, usually leaving me with an uncomfortable task: How do I tell them nicely that this might not be the right career for them? Because let’s face it: in this day and age of digital and smartphone cameras, everyone sees themselves as a photographer and many dream of making their passion into a profession. However, only few of these have the proper talent to actually succeed.“
