Happy International Dance Day! Today is the day! A work-in-progress will be shared this afternoon at the Salon Series at Whatlab.
Immense gratitude to Co.Erasga for the opportunity, care, and support in making this work possible.
This work is the final work in a triptych I’ve been developing over the last five years exploring identity, memory, and belonging. Inspired by the Chinese character 基 (ji), meaning foundation, the work asks how architectural forms hold the spiritual, cultural, and heart knowledge we carry within us.
My collaborative team has truly been a dream to work with, bringing fluidity, generosity, and imagination to what at times felt like a daunting subject. Deep gratitude, love, and respect to all of them.
Kay Huang, Concept and Direction, Performer
Vanessa Goodman, Artistic Facilitator
Jessica Hanzelkova, Set Designer
John Stockburger, Set Builder and Sound Design
Kaili Che, Performer
Sophia Makarenko, Performer

Working on something special that's half wobbly ladder and half crazy lap joints.
Very grateful to @crossmaneuver for the invitation to collaborate and design a set for her upcoming work and @johnstockburger for taking the idea for the set and making it reality via dozens of double-lap joints and some beautiful cedar wood ❤️

Warmest wishes for your holiday season from Crossmaneuver. It has been a joy to nurture creativity that lasts a lifetime throughout the past year. Looking back we will never forget the way each young artist found their own unique expressions through dance, song, and story.
Crossmaneuver began as a dream, a place where young artists could feel safe to learn, create, and explore, and it has been made a reality through the ongoing support of you, our community. Thank you.

“The Art of Theft”, based on the idea of an art heist, created by 3 artists, 3 volunteers, and 17 kids between the age of 6-12 in just one week. This was such a feat: with beautiful art, choreography, songs and amazing characters that became a multi-faceted story that’s funny, twisty, witty, and poignant. Feeling such fullness from all this.
Director/Choreographer: Kay Huang @crossmaneuver
Visual Artist: Trinity Barnes @trinity.wb_
Theatre Artist: Zoe Wiesenthal @zoewiesenthal
Thank you to the volunteers: Matias Lazarte, Rebecca, Tatiana Dexter Chaichian

Thanks to all who came out to celebrate the art of dance yesterday for International Dance Day. It was a wonderful day (and the weather gods seemed to agree!)😎💃💜
Big thanks also to Kay Huang/Crossmaneuver, Karen Jamieson Dance, soma anima arts, Burnaby Central Secondary School and Sophia “Sosa” Laurio, Vanessa Goodman/ Action at a Distance, Lesley Telford/Inverso Productions, Justine A. Chambers and Dance//Novella for their creativity and commitment, and to Gurdeep Pandher for his inspiring International Dance Day message.
