Nuvei X Mercedes F1 “The DNA of Performance”

Featuring:
Drivers Lewis Hamilton, George Russell, Team Principle Toto Wolff.

This was a really special shoot for me. I love my F1 and focus pulling a big sponsor video for Nuvei and Mercedes. What a great experience.

For the shoot we used two Arri 35 Cameras, shooting 2:1 anamorphic on the Viltrox Epic lenses.

As 1AC on the shoot, my job was to support the awesome @halfordfilms the best I could in providing fast turnaround for our camera setups. Working with high profile talent can be a real struggle as plans can change, and you are only ever given a small window of time.

Shooting interviews, a piece to cameras, and B-roll/pac shots - required pit-stop like changes of our own. We planned and practiced our setup changes from two-cam interviews, to a floating eye-direct (teleprompter) setup, and then finally getting to the easyrig and or slider for closeups and 50fps shots of the helmets.

What really helped me on this shoot was the use of the @arri companion app for A Cam/B Cam, and Hi-5 camera control. I could control runstop and see the status and settings of both cameras, ensuring we’re always matched up and ready to go. Running a reduced crew is always tough, but being able to give confidence to the dop and operator that both cameras have a second pair of eyes was reassuring, and kept the running of the day as smooth as possible.

Most importantly we all worked as a team and really smashed it. I’m really thankful to @_georgiebrown , @aidagarciavega for doing such a great job supporting in the camera dept.

Behind the Scenes - Walkers X Ghostbusters Frozen Empire TVC

This was super exciting shoot! We shot all through the evening until the morning for this one. Shooting with the Sony Venice in Rialto mode was a great example of how versatile builds can speed up turnaround. Ian uses the Sony Venice in Rialto mode, for quick movements and ease of operating, but also versatility and scalability. We were able to place the Rialto block into a shelving unit without any re-rigging of camera. Perfect for the fast paced nature of commercials. This is where the Cforce mini RF motor really shines. Having control of my focus with just the motor. Sometimes as a focus puller less is more.

The real challenge we faced in the camera dept for this one was keeping out of the way for other departments and keeping efficient. We were shooting to storyboard, and therefore could anticipate what Ian and team would need from us in camera. @floriwatts and @jarodkemp did a great job of helping us keep on top of this, keeping everything close enough, but also clearing the way for Art and Lighting.

Headset coms were essential to our communication. Talking across the supermarket, as we had to move across the isles, whilst also keeping close to ian and the camera. Without them I think it would have been a real struggle for us to keep as well organised as we were.

Finally, keeping a good moral on set and making sure all of us in the department were feeling good and not overwhelmed, was paramount to a good shoot.

Behind the Scenes - Starbucks Winter/Spring.

In cam stills may not reflect final shot/product.

This was a super fun and interesting two day shoot with Ian Murray. Ian decided to use the ‘skater scope’ to create a probe perspective. Allowing him to keep his creative choice of lensing - using Canon K35’s for each of the Starbucks Vignettes.

This was a fun and new challenge for me, as I had to build the camera for dolly with the skate scope, whilst also keeping everything easily swappable for when we didn’t need the scope - and needed some extra light. I decided to keep the cinetape on here as it helped greatly with keeping track of distances when on repeated dolly movements. Although with the scope you have to shoot at T.5.6, there’s no room for error with such shoots. Usually in mixed stills video shoots, you’re allocated a short time to get all your storyboard, meaning focus marks and rehearsals can be lost. With so many moving parts, you can’t afford for the one take that works to miss on sharps.

Another challenge we had on the shoot was working in such narrow spaces such as the Fenchurch Starbucks shop. @floriwatts and I had to communicate effectively and keep out of the way, and when our time came to jump in, we had to be speedy and purposeful - to make sure Ian could focus on the composition and creative elements of the shot. Working with VFX, variable frame rates, lazy Susan’s - can all be a lot to piece together - hence why it’s so important for us assistants to keep the technical problems away from our creative HOD’s.

For those with a keen eye we shot 6K to accommodate for a 9:16 delivery.

Dance Film: Gazelle

Featured on @nowness

@benny_wynn and I like to mix formats when we work, however we don’t always get access to large budgets.

Luckily I own a variety of mish mash lenses, including these two featured here:

The Angenieux 11.5-138mm S16 HR and my Kowa DIY 2x Anamorphic.

The Angenieux has an impressive 12x zoom, look particularly at slide 3 for how cool you can do a dolly zoom with it.

Dancer/Choreography: @jamalsterrett
Director: @benny_wynn
DOP: 👋
1AC: @coynecamera
Gaffer: @stuartswindelldp
Composer: @tlsylvest

Shoutout to @jamalsterrett for his immense talent.

Camera: Arri Alexa 35

‘Return to Blue’ - Joshua Shea Music Video

https://youtu.be/PQhtE9np6FQ?si=mobYkulg4H_LH0vy

This was a great passion project and labour of love, with 1 shoot day and multiple locations.
I’m so thankful to the wonderful people who made the video what it is.

Got to experiment with lots of cool techniques on this one, including VFX floating orbs with fish wire, slow shutter effects, a couple of match cuts and working with gaffer josh on using Dedo lightstream mirror system.

Cam kit:
Camera: Sony Venice.
Lenses: Tribe7 T-Tuned
Filtration: Glimmerglass 1

Wouldn’t be possible without the help from Ian Murray & @theunitbag 🙏

Directed by: @neosebastian3 & @joshua_shea
DOP: @coynecamera
Cast: @gracestewarxt & @max.beken
Produced by @tin.manproductions
Assistant producer: @amy.z56
1st AD: @indiabarnesx_
Gaffer: @joshmclaren_gaffer
Focus puller: @jarodkemp
Steadicam Op: @nicolas_di_matteo
AC’s/ Sparks: @elishahunterr & @oliviamooneygriffiths

Virgin Media x ‘Critters’. Ireland TVC Behind the Scenes.

Really nice to return to some more tabletop work. Live action puppetry can be really technical at times and needs fast turnarounds from the camera dept.

We were using the Century low angle prism on this one to get as low as possible to the floor. Massive thank you to @jarodkemp for prepping this one. And of course thank you @peter_ellmore for trusting us with this.
