Meet Protocol, a programmatic typeface developed by @counter__forms and @base_design (Melbourne) on the occasion of the 2026 Adelaide Biennial of Australian Art. Tasked with typographically responding to the theme Yield Strength — the maximum stress a material can withstand before undergoing permanent, plastic deformation — Counter Forms members @robert.janes, @tameferal.studio and @matterofsorts designed a generative browser-based type engine. By applying a number of server-side scripts in various combinations to a skeleton font, we created the potential for Protocol to flex, fray, disperse and dissipate.
