PETER COOLEY | A FOUNDATION IN PAINTING
Before Peter Cooley became widely recognised for his exuberant ceramic sculptures of Australian fauna and landscapes, painting formed the foundation of his practice.
Painted in gouache, ‘Kangaroo Paw 1’ and ‘Kangaroo Paw 2’
(2003) focus on one of Australia’s most distinctive native plants. Sweeping stems in vivid reds and greens move across saturated fields of blue, black and ochre - compositions that balance graphic clarity with painterly spontaneity.
Even at this early stage, many of the qualities that would later define Cooley’s celebrated ceramic sculptures are already present. A fascination with organic form, bold colour and the instinct for distilling nature into expressive shapes.
Today, Cooley is best known for his distinctive earthenware sculptures of Australian fauna - owls, cockatoos, cassowaries and kangaroos often depicted within their own landscape settings - richly decorated with colour and glaze, and held in major collections including the British Museum and the Art Gallery of New South Wales.
‘Kangaroo Paw 1’ and ‘Kangaroo Paw 2’ (2003) are currently on view in our Autumn Group Exhibition, pictured here framing Ildiko Kovacs’ ‘Wandering World’ (2025).
