🏆 Entries for the 27th Australian Timber Design Awards are now open.

PROJECT SPOTLIGHT - Ned Kelly Discovery Hub
Shortlisted | Public Building | 25th Australian Timber Design Awards
In Glenrowan, at the site of Ned Kelly's last stand, @contentstudio has designed a cultural heritage centre whose twisted helical form evokes the iconic armour worn by the Kelly gang.
A curved staircase follows the line of one of the helices, rising to a circular viewing platform that acts as a compass to the key staging points of the 1880 siege.
The challenge was to clad a complex spiralling steel frame, and sectioned timber gave the flexibility to adapt to the geometry on site. Charred Jarrah finished using the Shou Sugi Ban technique wraps the exterior in board and batten, its blackened surface a direct reference to the burning of the Glenrowan Hotel during the siege while eliminating the need for ongoing finishes in northeast Victoria's extreme climate. Blackbutt board and batten lines the stair wall and continues into the interpretive centre, creating warmth and depth against the charred exterior and forming a backdrop to the exhibition graphics. Many of the siege's events unfolded in wooded country, and the timber interiors help place visitors in that landscape.
Since its 2024 ATDA shortlisting, the Hub has been widely recognised: Overall Winner and Regional Design Award at the 2024 Lysaght Inspirations Design Awards, Finalist in the Victorian Premier's Design Awards for Architectural Design, and winner of the Interpretation Australia National Award for Excellence.

Still some work to do on site! A glimpse into the transformation of this Victorian-era pharmacy on Brunswick St, Fitzroy!✨
As part of its adaptive reuse, the details from the intricate plasterwork ceiling and ornate window framing to the patterned tiled floor are being carefully preserved while the building transitions into its new life as an IVF clinic.
