Since 2022, #CocoCapitan has been repurposing sails, cutting and sewing them to achieve the desired formats and shapes. She selects them primarily for the iconographic or textual elements they already bear.
For several years, Capitán has developed a personal alphabet combining numbers and letters; thus, the number “72” sewn onto a sail appeared to her as “TS,” allowing her to form “72UN4M1 / TSUNAMI.” She similarly writes “SYNESTHESIA” as “5YN357H3514”—numbers are often inverted, such as 3/E or 4/A, a phenomenon commonly associated with dyslexia.
Thus, on the horizon, she reads “L4CRIMO54” as “Lacrimosa” (2025): a sailboat navigating the ocean of her tears, of which the artist presents a reduced version in the exhibition in the form of a model.

#CocoCapitan’s texts emerge at a near-daily rhythm. Often aphoristic or poetic in nature, they appear as casual notes, rendered in the artist's distinctive handwriting across diverse supports—from monumental sails to hotel notepads, even gallery note cards.
To date, this practice has been consecrated by two books, “If You’ve Seen It All, Close Your Eyes” (2019) and “Words on Paper”(2025) both published by #ChoseCommune.

If in #HongKong, visit “Imagination Investments,” #CocoCapitan’s first exhibition in the city, on view across three locations at Taikoo Place, Quarry Bay, as well as in the streets of Soho and Lan Kwai Fong.
On this occasion, Capitán presents the Hong Kong iteration of “Memory Adoption Bureau,” the artist’s ongoing participatory project engaging with collective memory and inviting visitors to adopt individual memories in the form of vernacular photographs. By redistributing over 10,000 vernacular photographs one by one, #MemoryAdoptionBureau proposes a reallocation of responsibility, reframing questions of authorship, ownership, and value.
Bringing together photographs, paintings on canvas and sails, poems, sculptures, an in situ project, a participatory installation, and public interventions, all works in “Imagination Investments” incorporate elements of Capitán’s idiosyncratic handwritten texts.

I don’t care for the important stuff, I just want to ride the bus and listen to jazz.

Clara was the first sailor, I think we took this picture fourteen years ago or so. Before I had published any books, before NAÏVY existed as a series. We spent the day walking and walking and taking photo after photo. In the evening, we would look at pictures from my recent trip to China, before ‘Middle Point Between My House and China’. Thank you to Clara and to all my seaters who let me take a part of them and translate into a part of my universe.
It feels moving to come to Hong Kong to find this photo in the South China Morning Post.
Thank you for all the visits, all the press, all the kind words. I’m so grateful and humbled. My art is nothing without your soul appreciating it.
