Episode 13 of Why Arts? – Building Participatory Environments Through Art with @coco_allred Coco Allred

In this conversation, I’m in conversation with Coco Allred, a visual artist and educator whose work explores the intersections of public space, aesthetics, and experimental pedagogy. From sculpture and printmaking to participatory environments, Coco creates experiences that invite people to engage, question, and learn with one another—activating space as a site for collective learning and resistance. She is a current master’s student in the Art, Culture, and Technology program at MIT. @actmit

In this episode, we also explore how, for children, art becomes a natural extension of play—a space to narrate experiences, express emotions, and grow through iteration. And importantly, how art can also feel challenging. That frustration, that tension, is often where the deepest learning begins.

This conversation invites us to think about:
✨ How can art activate spaces for collective learning?
✨ What does it mean to create with others, not just for others?
✨ How can art nurture connection across generations?

🎧 Listen to the full episode on YouTube and Spotify.

(PC in order: Carlos Avendano, Heidi Erikson, Studio Gerda and Rosario Oddo)

I will share more about the artworks in the exhibition and photos soon, but for now an invitation!

🔵 Primacy of Shape Closing Reception: Sept 29 at 5:00 pm

Ron Grady @childology.co an amazing educator, artist, and PhD at Harvard School of Education will join me for a walk through of the exhibition and conversation about art and pedagogy.

Thank you to Sarah Hizel, Curator of the Wiesner Gallery, @artsatmit , the chancellors office, and @actmit for your support to make this show happen!

DREAM CLOUDS ☁️✨

Each year, the School of Art kicks off the fall semester with a new alum-designed T-shirt. For 2025, artist and educator @coco_allred (BFA ’20) brings us a design inspired by play, creativity, and community.

“I think everyone can and should draw for the sake of learning — drawing to absorb a place or understand an idea. I wanted the design to feel like an invitation, a reminder to myself and others to go back to modes of making that feel easy and are a form of play and relaxation.”

🔗 Read how Coco’s path from CMU to residencies and collaborations, and now her master’s at MIT, shaped this year’s shirt ➡️ art.cmu.edu

Grateful for the opportunity to spend time at @centrumresidencies at Fort Worden!

Being in such a beautiful place and town with a robust creative community was so inspiring.

Highlights include:
- experimenting with monotypes late into the night
- connecting with Centrum residents and staff over Tuesday tea
- making vertical sculptures using paper pulp covered panels I’ve been making for the past few years for the first time
- studio conversations, chill time, and meals with @joshuatkery and @perebite
- poetry readings and studio visits in Port Townsend
- time spent exploring the beaches and batteries that have enamored me since childhood
- thinking about possibilities for a future project that connects speculative architecture, multimedia performance, and community engagement to imagine the future of this site

Thanks to everyone that made this experience so special!

Driving my work is a belief that to address urgent environmental and social concerns, we need experiences for community engagement that help us rethink our relationship with the earth, centering reciprocity, collectivity, and love. Weaving is a medium I gravitate to in pursuit of these ideas.

Pictures:
- Stills from Recursive Gardens
- Reading about weaving willow to make outdoor sculptures for garden beds inspired by children's toys
- Drawings of woven wire
- A frame loom weaving I made while talking to @kewpii
- @ponzanochildren students collaboratively weaving paper through plexiglass sculptures

Meet @coco_allred (2016 Visual Arts), Seattle-based visual artist & YoungArts recipient of the @anthropologie Leading with Creativity Award. Coco teamed up with Anthropologie Associate Design Director, Julie Gwin, to create a candle capsule collection. Exploring various moods, colors, patterns, and shapes, Coco designed patterns for three different vessels. Coco's candles are on sale now and 100% of sales will be donated to YoungArts and our mission of supporting artists 🥰 Check them out at the link in bio.

Drawing Herd is in full swing! Three workshops down and seven to go!

Kat Larson @katlarsonhealer integrated mindfulness and meditation into the first workshop and we drew the shape of our breath. Next we went to the farmers markets to pick produce and flower clippings to print tea towels. This morning, Kendall Wiggins joined us for some slow birding and we mapped our observations through drawing.

Year 3 of Drawing Herd is about to begin! I’m grateful to be partnering with @cityofissaquah through their season arts grant to bring free, all ages classes to wonderful city parks.

In the series, drawing, and site specific observation is paired with another discipline that impacts how we can understand place. This ranges from choreography to gardening to meditation to birdwatching. Check out the schedule and sign up through Eventbrite!

One of my favorite sections from Recursive Gardens

The children playing come from a 1950s bandaid commercial and remind me of Muybridge photographs. Ava’s music slows down these scenes with the paper and brings a sense of wonder
