THE BEAUTY OF CARE (ENG Below + in the comments)

“I want to live my life fully now! Because no one will repay my life’s loan when it’s all over,” a CO-HATY resident once shared with us during an interview.
So we strive to make the possible — and sometimes even the impossible — happen to give these people the living conditions they deserve, here and now”

MISSION
CO-HATY provides affordable housing through sustainable (re)construction, shared research and design, educational events, and the development of innovative policies.

CO-HATY creates emergency shelters that protect lives and prevent people from returning to homes in war zones, frontline territories, or occupied areas.

VISION
Housing is a fundamental right for everyone. At CO-HATY, we create sustainable and transparent models of affordable housing for people with diverse needs and life circumstances.

Our rapid response to the housing crisis in Ukraine is helping to develop a new affordable housing system. This system will address humanitarian challenges and restore the independence of those affected by the war.

VALUES
Dignity, sustainability, safety, urgency, compassion, humanity, community, inclusivity, feminism, care, equality, collaboration, integration, beauty, circularity, responsibility, justice, experimentation, professionalism, locality, resourcefulness, transparency, impact.

Creating affordable housing is a transformative process for the communities where it’s established. For us, it’s essential to build not only comfortable housing but also environments where internally displaced persons (IDPs) can integrate into new communities.

Each CO-HATY project reflects our values, embedding them within these communities, which in turn ignite chains of positive change, local initiatives, and projects.

CO-HATY Projects Follow Five Key Stages, Reflecting the Five Aspects of Care (according to Joan Tronto’s concept)

For us, the process of creating protection is as important as the end result. This process of care has its own beauty — caring means recognizing a need, taking responsibility, and being ready to act.

WHO WE ARE? (ENG Below in the comments)

CO-HATY is a project born in response to Ukraine’s housing crisis caused by the full-scale war. In the early weeks of Russia’s 2022 invasion, the METALAB team and relocated members of Urban Curators from Kyiv decided to take action — to create housing with comfortable and dignified living conditions for those who lost their homes.

Today, CO-HATY has ten sites across three regions: Ivano-Frankivsk, Vinnytsia, and Khmelnytskyi.
CO-HATY began as a volunteer initiative. Today, we are a professional organization developing housing and fostering communities. With the expansion of our work and increased support from partners, CO-HATY is now registered as a charitable foundation. We have created around 1,500 places to live. Alongside renovating buildings into shelters and improving existing accommodations, our team, together with partners, is developing a model for affordable, long-term housing, which is currently not available in Ukraine.

HOW WE WORK
First, the CO-HATY team studies the needs of internally displaced people and seeks opportunities to launch new projects.
We look for buildings that have been unused for some time, such as abandoned dormitories or educational facilities, often owned by the state or municipalities.
For each CO-HATY home, we design custom layouts with rooms (apartments), shared spaces, kitchens, and bathrooms.

Our team has also designed a unique set of furniture specifically for CO-HATY housing, based on research into the needs of displaced people. These items are made exclusively for CO-HATY spaces.

RENOVATING FOR COMFORT
We then begin renovations. Working within realistic budgets, we aim to find affordable yet attractive solutions and collaborate with local suppliers. We plaster, fill, replace windows and doors, and, when needed, repair heating, plumbing, and electrical systems.

We finish by creating a welcoming environment with light colors, plants, and personal touches to make the spaces feel like home.

MAKING A HOME
Once finished, CO-HATY homes are opened for residents. In the future, we aim to provide ongoing management for these spaces; currently, we are testing this model at one site.

2022 // Kindergarten
Location: Ivano-Frankivsk
Area: 1896 sq. m
Capacity: 140 IDPs

2022-2023 // Hotel
Location: Ivano-Frankivsk
Area: 1132 sq. m
Capacity: 80 IDPs
Budget: USD 280,000

2023 // Dormitory near Kamianets-Podilskyi
Location: Zinkivtsi
Area: 3200 sq. m
Capacity: 250 IDPs

This collaboration aligns with our pre-war goal of implementing circular economy practices in the Ukrainian context.

2023 // Children’s Social Support Center
Location: Tlumach
Area: 1510 sq. m
Capacity: 130 IDPs
Budget: USD 40,000

Area: 1132 sq. m
Capacity: 80 IDPs
Budget: USD 280,000
Status: Completed

This project is unique in that we continue to manage residents’ needs and support their initiatives. Since there is no similar experience in Ukraine to draw from, we are experimenting and learning together. Our goal is to foster trust, comfort, and community integration.

2023 // Dormitory near Kamianets-Podilskyi
Location: Zinkivtsi
Area: 3200 sq. m
Capacity: 250 IDPs
Budget: USD 630,000
Status: Completed

For this project, we approached our RE-WIN partners, who provide quality used windows to Ukraine, with a new request: to supply plumbing, furniture, doors, and various building materials. This collaboration aligns with our pre-war goal of implementing circular economy practices in the Ukrainian context.

2023 // Children’s Social Support Center
Location: Tlumach
Area: 1510 sq. m
Capacity: 130 IDPs
Budget: USD 40,000

The uniqueness of this project lies in furnishing it with custom-made furniture, including a specially designed set for mini-kitchens. We strive to involve IDPs in our furniture production process, providing them with employment opportunities.

CO-HATY is participating in the World Urban Forum 2026 in Baku, Azerbaijan.

This year’s forum focuses on housing, safe and resilient cities, and communities. On Thursday, May 21, we will host a panel discussion as part of the forum. The discussion will center around two themes: the social housing crisis in Ukraine and the pilot project in which CO-HATY serves as the social housing operator.
The CO-HATY approach has the potential to be scaled nationwide and can serve as an example of an innovative response to the housing crisis caused by the war.
Our team continues to develop social housing projects during wartime, which brings unique challenges. Yet even under these extremely difficult circumstances, Ukraine is demonstrating innovative and practical solutions. During the discussion, we will explore how these practices can be scaled and adapted more broadly.
We invite other forum participants to join the discussion on May 21.

Partisipants:
Mr. Pavlo Frolov, Member of Parliament of Ukraine (online)
Ms. Ludmila Sirko, Deputy Head of Ivano-Frankivsk Administration, Responsible for IDPs
Ms. Anastasiya Ponomaryova @ponomaryovaanastasiya, Project lead in the Kalush Social Housing Project board member of the Charitable Foundation CO-HATY
Mr. Orkhan Aliyev, Chief of Party, HFHI in Ukraine
Annika Grafweg, HFHI EME Region, Housing & Partnership Ecosystem Advisor
Mr. Knut Hoeller, Managing Board Member, IWO, Germany
Moderator: Ms. Anna Pashynska @anna_pashynska, board member, CEO, NGO @metalab.space, Ukraine

How do war and armed conflicts reshape not only people, but also memory, spaces, and the very idea of home?

CO-HATY became part of Patrimoines en résistance - De Tombouctou à Odessa (Heritage in Resistance – From Timbuktu to Odessa) — a major exhibition exploring destruction, resistance, and repair in times of war and armed conflicts.
Bringing together stories from Ukraine, Syria, Palestine, Afghanistan, and other countries, the exhibition combines archives, photographs, maps, 3D visualizations, and testimonies from people living through the consequences of war. Among them is the experience of CO-HATY in Ukraine.

— 20 May 2026 — 3 January 2027
— Tickets via the link in @citedelarchi’s bio
*This exhibition addresses conflict zones and includes content that may be distressing for sensitive audiences and children under 12.*

In partnership with @grandpalais_immersif RMN, Commission Nationale Française pour l’UNESCO.

The need for affordable and safe housing in Ukraine still far exceeds the supply. Together with partners, we have opened the Zirochka complex, which will provide affordable housing for about 150 people. Some residents shared their impressions of their new home. And each of them recalls their own home with sadness and longing.
Abandoned buildings can be transformed into decent and affordable housing for Ukrainians—and Zirochka is an example of this.

The project is implemented by METALAB/CO-HATY with funding and support from the general partner, Habitat for Humanity International @habitatforhumanity, @habitatforhumanityua, @aktion_deutschland_hilft, and @postcodelotterie @habitatdeutschland, in partnership with the Kalush city administration @kalush_rada.

Zirochka complex has opened its doors to residents!

Here, people can begin to rebuild their lives after losing their homes, find support, and rediscover hope.
Safe and decent housing is a fundamental right for every human. This value brings together the partnership of Habitat for Humanity and CO-HATY.

Zirochka is a unique project in Ukraine, carried out in a close, comprehensive partnership. It represents a model where responsibility does not end with the completion of reconstruction — it continues in a new form.
CO-HATY now serves as the housing operator, providing ongoing housing services for residents at Zirochka. We’re happy to have created a place where people feel safe and comfortable, and where — for the first time in many years — they can feel at home again.
We are grateful to all our partners who made this project possible, and to all the guests who joined us for such a meaningful opening day.

There were hugs, tears of joy, words of gratitude, hope, and warm wishes for the new residents — and we felt it all.

Dear residents, from now on, Zirochka is your home, and we are your guests.
Happy Housewarming!

The project is implemented by METALAB/CO-HATY with funding and support from the general partner, Habitat for Humanity International @habitatforhumanityua, @habitatdeutschland, in partnership with the Kalush city administration @kalush_rada.

Kalush is one of the key communities in Ivano-Frankivsk Oblast (Ukraine) hosting internally displaced people, with around 5,000 registered residents. Despite an overall decline in the number of IDPs in the region, western Ukraine remains one of the main areas for long-term displacement.
Most people live in collective shelters that were never designed for long-term residence and do not meet privacy or accessibility standards, creating an urgent need to move from temporary shelter to sustainable housing. Others rent accommodation, but its quality often does not match the price.
The Kalush city council is open to collaboration across departments and to exploring new housing management models within a complex legal framework. This is critically important, as Ukraine has very little experience with municipal social rental housing.

The former Zirochka kindergarten was selected for its municipal ownership, vacant space, and convenient location — all of which align with CO-HATY’s principles of integrating residents into urban life. At the same time, the building’s spatial layout enabled the transformation of the former kindergarten into private living spaces, while incorporating inclusive design to ensure dignified, accessible housing.

”For the first time since we left our home, I’ve felt that I’m back home again. For the first time in four years, I want to buy something for my home." – Inna says sincerely.
Yuliia from Kherson shares her feelings that, after moving into her new home in Zirochka, something very good lies ahead for her. We feel deeply touched hearing this. We rejoice with residents and for them.
In times of war, forced displacement, and uncertainty, a home is not something abstract; it is safety, dignity, stability, and the chance to rebuild one’s life.
We have compiled a few inspiring comments from Zirochka residents that they shared with us.
Zirochka is opening soon, and it is the people and their stories that transform the building into a home.

The project is implemented by METALAB/CO-HATY with funding and support from the general partner, Habitat for Humanity International @habitatforhumanity, in partnership with the Kalush city administration @kalush_rada

///

At the end of March, our team members @anna_pashynska @andobrova @taniapashynska @ponomaryovaanastasiya traveled to Sweden to receive the Erskine Award 2026 on behalf of the CO-HATY Foundation – in recognition of its social contribution to architecture. This is the first Erskine Award ever won by Ukraine.

Our team received incredible support, warmth, and genuine love from fellow architects in Sweden.

“CO-HATY“ is a Ukrainian wordplay combining the noun “houses“ (HATY) with the verb “to love“ (KOHATY) – and the prefix CO, meaning “together.“ It perfectly captures what we do.
So when our team heard the phrase “We co-haty you“ on stage at the Architecture Gala (Arkitekturgalan) that evening, it felt like it had been made for us. We’re adopting it as our inspirational motto for the year ahead.

We are grateful to everyone for the strong support and for being there with us.

We co-haty you!

We co-haty you!

We co-haty you!
