The Iceman Cometh with ClockPhase
Going straight from @feteduvoid to a two festival tour run with @theicemanspecial is possibly the best way to kick off October. If I time traveled & told myself five years ago that not only would I be on the road performing for them but they’re now my best friends, I would not believe myself. The past two weeks have given me so much artistic and comedic inspiration.

I belong to Louisiana, and New Orleans has me.

It gets into you in a way that’s hard to explain to someone who hasn’t felt it. The Acadians got expelled from Nova Scotia, pushed out, scattered, and somehow ended up here in the bayous and just stayed here. They put roots down so deep the land changed around them instead of the other way around and I think about that a lot.
That’s an instinct to find your place and hold it no matter what comes.
When people ask how I can stay knowing hurricanes will keep coming and what the water is eventually going to do to this coast, I don’t really have a clean answer for them because that doesn’t translate if you have to ask that question. I just know that when it happens I’ll be on a boat, still here. Same as it ever was.
The art and community that comes out of Louisiana is a big part of why. It doesn’t exist anywhere else because it couldn’t. It grew out of this specific soil, this specific mix of suffering and joy and heat and water. I want to contribute to that. I want what I make to belong to this place the way this place belongs to me.

My name is Andrew America. I am a projectionist and visual artist known by the moniker ClockPhase. My primary mission as an artist is to prioritize the archival preservation and documentation of psychedelic history, counterculture aesthetics, and the visual traditions born from that movement, while simultaneously incorporating elements of traditional lightshow and A/V projection techniques into contemporary practice through my own methodology.

My practice operates within a hybrid analog-digital framework where I reconstruct traditional lightshow techniques by manipulating colored liquids across glass plates over LED light. Using a camera to capture the plates in real time and compositing layers within a live digital environment, I’m manipulating analog practical effects and pre-recorded footage simultaneously. Modern VJing and projection art are direct descendants of the overhead projector and analog effects era, and I aim to continue this lineage by integrating live analog manipulation with contemporary digital tools, and allowing the core aesthetic and methodology of traditional lightshows to evolve and thrive.​​​​​
