Weโre supporting pollinators, boosting biodiversity & enjoying ourselves along the way - come join us! ๐๐ฆ๐ชฒ

To celebrate #WorldBeeDay we hosted a pop-up pollinator planting event generously supported by @cdalondon for local businesses and @clerkenwelldesignweek visitors to take a pause from their busy day and plant a bloom to support the bees of Clerkenwell ๐๐๐ธ Thank you Team @savechildrenuk for all your help and @stephaniecharlotte17 for bringing bags of style, enthusiasm and planting skills to the park! Thanks also to the lovely people from oeelectrics @gsmithscentre @alanbaxterltd and all the designers, architects and creatives who stopped by to plant sunflowers, wallflowers, lambs ear and geraniums to feed wild bees and transform the park into a buzzing bee paradise!
This afternoon, our wonderful Y12 and y9 volunteers from @queenscollegelondon worked alongside the students of @officialqmul to make hoverfly lagoons and bee hotels for the pollinator path as well as taking part in the first ever #bioblitz in @stjohnsgarden.ec1, led by citizen scientist Susanna! We found common carder bees, early bumblebees, flower bees and lotsof hoverflies too :) More than ever, urban bees need our support and more than ever we need urban bees - to support biodiversity, protect our food supply and bring our city streets and parks to life ๐๐๐ธ Thank you everyone who took part in todayโs events! We really enjoyed planting flowers, discovering creatures and creating habitats with you :) The small actions we take together can have a big impact on the future of urban bees ๐๐๐ #community #CDW2026

Is it a mini whale or a monstrous tadpole? Neither! Itโs a MycoNest, a biodegradable bee hotel made of hemp where nesting tubes are grown and covered by a mycelium layer for cavity-nesting solitary bees to make their nests in. Because the tubes are grown rather than drilled, wing-sensitive pollinators may prefer them - one of the hypotheses weโll be exploring this season! Designed and fabricated in Hungary by @myconester, the nest has performed well in rural locations and this is its first test run in an urbanised setting. Having placed a MycoNest on top of each of the wooden bee hotels along the pollinator path, a masters student from @officialqmul will be assessing which type of home the cavity-nesting bees prefer ๐๐๐ Looking forward to seeing what happens next! Thank you Anna, Clara and Alex for involving us in this exciting research and thank you @maltastreetgarden @stjohnschurchyard@stjohnsgarden.ec1 and all 10 Clerkenwellgreen spaces for taking part in the pioneering study ๐ If you want to know more, product details are at the end of the photos #bee #habitats #innovation #clerkenwellpollinatorpath

With so little green space in central London, John Little, founder of CareNotCapital.org and @grassroofco has a great tip for making the most of small spaces to boost biodiversityโฆ
โUsing vertical space delivers more bang for buck when it comes to biodiversity in urban areas. Bee posts are really space efficient and bring structural complexity and visual interest to a mosaic landscape.Consider growing ivy up posts or standing deadwood - itโs one of the most important native plants we have and a critical food and nesting resource for many birds and insects. And consider how youโll care for the space from the outset of the project.โ
See this advice in action in the newly-established Hicks Hall Gardens on St Johnโs Street, designed by @meristemdesign with 3 bee posts and 12 ivy posts - ecologically valuable and aesthetically pleasing examples of using vertical space ๐๐๐
And if youโre looking for more mature ivy posts, take a stroll up to the beautiful @arlingtonassociation where the ivy post has been established over a dead tree fern stump - beautiful and a biodiversity powerhouse ๐

The pollinator garden in St Jamesโs Church garden, installed a couple of weeks ago, has settled in really well, with drifts of wallflowers, lambs ear, catmint, toadflax, lavender and even a ready-made caterpillar corner - thereโll be no shortage of nesting habitats and forage for comma and red admiral caterpillars this summer! Well done Nicole, Jess and Lily for creating a beautiful space for Clerkenwellโs bees and butterflies #clerkenwellpollinatorpath #EC1 #bees #butterflies #islingtoninbloom

This week at COLPAI on the @clerkenwellpollinatorpath
The children spotted a Hairy-footed flower bee on the school roof today - during a โFIT countโ for the #Clerkenwell Pollinator Path monitoring... They also found pupae from the striking leaf-like Angle Shades moth and what we think will become a Goat moth ....
All the new pollinator plants are growing well with excellent care from the children at Gardening Club ๐ช๐ฆ
Next week mulching and making some #bee mounds ..... Canโt wait ๐

โ๏ธWith so many garden events taking place in SJG and along the @clerkenwellpollinatorpaththis year, itโs been really helpful to use AI for creating colorful posters. More information on how below! โฌ๏ธโฌ๏ธโฌ๏ธโ๏ธ
๐บMODEL PROMPT ๐บ
Design me a poster for an event titled โEVENT NAMEโ on DATE, TIME at LOCATION. The title should take up about half the page with the date, time and location displayed clearly, but a tiny bit smaller underneath. Make sure it has designs and is colourful in the art and design style of the attached image above. (if you have attached reference images)
๐ธBe aware that AI often makes mistakes so itโs important to check your poster carefully and be clear about what tweaks you want made before you reach the limit. For example, if the location was wrong you could say โyou got the location wrong, please change it to ACTUAL LOCATIONโ๐ธ

The bee hotel in @charterhouselondon looks stunning against the brickwork โค๏ธ Big shout out to Steve from Northampton square, who risked limb and legs to get the bee posts securely in the hard ground and to Kim for a cup of tea and biscuits in the sunshine at the perfect moment ๐๐๐ Clerkenwell meadow on Skinner St seemed an exceptionally good site for pollinators as itโs an unusually large swathe of undisturbed grassland - check it out if you havenโt already! So thatโs 15 bee hotels, 6 bee banks, 4 hoverfly lagoons and lots of pollinator plants installed this season ๐ช๐๐๐ธ If your Clerkenwell green space is looking for pollinator plants or habitats to be installed this season, DM us here and letโs make it happen! #clerkenwellpollinatorpath #bees #legs #tea #nature ๐๐๐ธ๐๐

Can you see the female Red mason bee collecting mud with her mandibles? She will take it back to the tube in the bee hotel where she is laying eggs and provisioning them with pollen. In between each egg on a bed of pollen she will build a partition mud wall. When she has built 7 or 8 'rooms', she will plug the tube with more mud to protect her babies from predetors. She then finds another tube and does it all over again. Maybe 3 times.
We keep a patch of bare soil damp near to the bee hotels to be used in nest construction.

We all learned *a lot* today as @alison_urbanbees came to talk to @clerkenwellpollinatorpath volunteers about which bee-friendly plants work well in planters, even on exposed balconies or in shady corners. Just a single pot can provide a life-saving pitstop for smaller solitary bees with shorter foraging ranges.Alison stressed the importance of planting flowers for all seasons, providing forage for caterpillars and creating nesting habitats, before volunteers led by Alison headed off to perform โbee makeoversโ on nearby street planters and raised beds ๐๐๐ธ๐ฆ๐ Scabiosa, Vinca minor, rosemary, yarrow, erysimum, erigeron, brunnera and geranium were all on the plant list with plenty of compost, mulch and water. Couldnโt have wished for a sunnier afternoon, a more knowledgable tutor and a more enthusiastic group of volunteers - thank you everyone for making it an afternoon to remember! A special shout out to Sam and Helen @gsmithscentre who hosted us in their auditorium and gave us a special peek ๐ of their beautiful biodiversity rooftop garden, to Jess @stjohnschurchyard who is leading pitstop planting along the path and to Michael @londonnationalparkcity who has filmed Alisonโs talk - coming to an Insta feed near you soon :) #guerillagardening #bees #clerkenwellpollinatorpath #EC1

The pollinator garden in Northampton Square is taking shape and we had a beautiful sunny day for installing a sandy ground-nesting bee habitat and a stylish dead hedge to demarcate the garden, protect the bee bank from trampling and provide a new habitat for invertebrates - all made using tree fall from the square ๐๐๐ธ Thanks to everyone who helped! Especially Lily from @islingtoncouncil who tirelessly sawed the vertical posts, Steve from the Friends of Northampton Square who banged them all into the parched ground, and entomologists from @officialqmul who were busy devising recording strategies to measure occupancy rates, nesting preferences & soil temperatures to improve our understanding of how we can help bees survive and thrive in urban spaces.Watch this space for hoverfly lagoons, log piles and puddling stations coming soon โฆ ๐ธ๐๐๐๐ช๐ธ #EC1 #clerkenwellpollinatorpath #bees #urbangarden #community
