I was invited to support and share my insights with the The 2026 Just City Mayoral Fellowship which focused on moving local projects forward in a time of constant
change and uncertainty — specifically, how cities can maintain a vision of equity, address injustice, andadvance the design and development of more just cities while responding to shifting resources,
capacities, and constraints.
Over this semester-long program, the Lab’s Just City Index frames dynamic presentations and dialogues with experts in the fields of architecture, landscape architecture, urban
planning, art activism, housing, and public policy.
Throughout the Fellowship, mayors and their staff identify how injustices manifest in the social, economic, and physical infrastructures of their own cities and develop manifestos of action for their communities.
The 2026 cohort in particularexplore reparative development: embedding justice and equity goals within efforts to repair economic disinvestment and restore the cultural identity of neighborhoods through just city design and development strategies.
The 2026 Just City Mayoral Fellows are: Broadview, IL Mayor Katrina Thompson;
Columbia, MO Mayor Barbara Buffaloe;
Durham, NC Mayor Leonardo Williams; Fairbanks, AK Mayor Mindy O’Neall;
Gresham, OR Mayor Travis Stovall;
Moline, IL Mayor Sangeetha Rayapati;
Salem, MA Mayor Dominick Pangallo;
Santa Monica, CA Mayor Caroline Torosis.
The Just City Mayoral Fellowship is a program of the United States Conference of Mayors and The Just City Lab, made possible with additional support from the Kresge Foundation. The United States Conference of Mayors is the official nonpartisan organization of cities with populations of 30,000 or more, with each city represented by its chief elected official, the mayor.
The Just City Lab is a design lab located within the Harvard Graduate School of Design led by architect and urban planner Toni L. Griffin.
The Lab has developed nearly 10 years of publications, case studies, convening tools and exhibitions that examine how design and planning can have a positive impact of addressing the long-standing conditions
of social and spatial injustice in cities.

I want to begin by expressing my deep gratitude to the @harvardgsd Graduate School of Design, the @loebfellows Fellowship, and the @harvarddivinity School &Rural GSD for allowing me to create space to center Indigenous voices in a conversation about the care and design of rural landscapes
We should not design without these voices . Full Stop
Indigenous perspectives must remain a nonnegotiable when we think about stewardship, land, and our collective responsibility to place as a foundational value .
(also, unpopular opinion, a land acknowledgment by itself is not enough)
We had the privilege of hearing from Midnight Lujan, whose work across creative writing, film, and fashion reminds us that storytelling is a powerful form of authorship, of protection, and of cultural continuity. Her insights, shaped in part by her studies with the @instituteofamericanindianarts , challenged us to think critically about who holds narrative power and how that power is exercised.
We were also guided by Heather Dorries from the Centre for Indigenous Studies at @uoft University of Toronto , whose work helped us interrogate the perceived divide between urban and rural landscapes. She invited us to consider how that distinction is often constructed, and how we might begin to engage more responsibly as allies in the planning and design of land that has always held deeper histories and relationships.
This conversation is deeply personal to me. It sits at the core of how I think about design, development, and responsibility. I am grateful to have moderated the stage with such thoughtful voices, and to be part of an institution willing to hold space for these necessary and, at times, challenging conversations.
The weekend as a whole brought together an extraordinary group of speakers and perspectives. I look forward to continuing those conversations and building connections with the broader community that gathered over these past few days.
please check out their work, follow them and support
Request more conversations like this wherever you may be
And check out the throwback Of Midnight and Ifrom 2019 🥰 #rideordie

The weekend as a whole brought together an extraordinary group of speakers and perspectives. I look forward to continuing those conversations and building connections with the broader community that gathered over these past few days.
please check out their work, follow them and support

And check out the throwback Of Midnight and Ifrom 2019 🥰 #rideordie

To say that I am humbled by being honored as a 2026 The Chicago Defender Woman of Excellence is a vast understatement. Thank you @iam2dy4 Dyanna Knight Lewis and the @chicagodefenderteam.
The evening, the fellowship, and the encouragement to continue in service to my community served as a much needed moment of encouragement, an ignition even! Becuase it;s hard when the needle doesn’t move as fast or as easily as we would like it to.
The evening was a call to lead fearlessly, to remain humble, and to lean on my incredible peers.
These awards are given not for what we do, but for who we are. After sitting surrounded by women who fight for momentum and change every day, just like I do, I am feeling justified and so deeply loved.
To be honored and mentioned in the same breath as women like @melodyspanncooper , who received the Lifetime Achievement Award, @toisalter , named Woman of the Year, and @deemrobinson1 , accepting the so deserved Vanguard Award, gives me the leeway to know there is still more to come and even bigger shoes to fill. I am blown away. As they encouraged, I will continue to take up space.
But, my favorite moment shows just how important Divine Intervention can be. I had the honor to sit next to and bask in the excellence of Bishop Shirley Coleman. We engaged in “light conversation” about challenging homelessness reform, advocacy, and community development.
For a moment, I felt like I had “my” family in the room even though I didn’t. For a moment, I didn’t feel the “achievement loneliness” that comes when you receive an award and then go home alone to quietly set it on the shelf. A special thank you for “adopting me” for the evening, Bishop Shirley Coleman & @stephaniedcoleman . Thank you for sharing your special moment with me and for ensuring I felt your love and God’s Purpose. It is something I will forever be grateful for and will never forget.
I cannot wait to engage my new Chicago Defender Women of Excellence fam, to celebrate them, to create moments of encouragement, and to continue to create momentum in the city we love.
A few months left at my fellowship at@harvardgsd @loebfellows … im coming out full throttle ♥️

We are starting this year in a place of deep gratitude. Being named one of 2025Eater’s 38 Best Restaurants in Chicago is an incredible honor, and we are thankful to Ashok Selvam for recognizing the intention and heart behind what we are building here.
To speak honestly for a moment. This work has been hard. As the owners of this restaurant, we carry the responsibility of keeping a space alive that was created with and for the community. There have been long nights where food couldn’t make it to a table, financial hardships that seem impossible, real challenges to keep people coming in the door, and nights where continuing forward took everything we had.
Still, we stay committed because this space matters. World class hospitality on the South Side matters. Access matters. Representation matters. Belonging matters.
And our guests matter. We have the most patient , most kind, most loving guests. We are far from perfect but when our guests see us falling they step in to encourage us, to support us, to mentor us.
Bronzeville Winery was created as a place for joy, creativity, culture, and connection. A place for neighbors, artists, elders, families, and the next generation to gather and feel seen. We are fighting every day to sustain this space so it remains rooted in purpose and grounded in love for our community.
Thank you to EVERYONEfrom our hardworking and understanding team , our culinary community , our partners for your care and . Thank you to every guest who supports us so we can keep our lights on. Thank you to our community for believing in what we are building and protecting it with us.
Thank you to everyone who made 2025 possible by standing beside us 🖤
We are grateful. We are resilient. And we are just getting started.
Xoxo, Cecilia & Eric - Bronzeville Winery

This year, our collective work welcomed 65,000 people, supported minority owned small businesses, helped secure more than $15 million dollars in grants for community projects, and produced more than $30 million dollars in capital for small businesses nationwide. None of this happened alone. It happened because people chose to use business as a force for good (and because my team doesn’t F around)
1. At @southsidesanctuarychi we turned vacant land into belonging for 25,000 visitors and 5,000+ youth, while supporting 500+ small businesses, reducing reported crime with1000 feet by 30% and increasing local business revenue by 25%. A blueprint for activating empty public owned plazas and activating space in cities .
2. I was selected to attend Harvard for a year as a Loeb Fellow at the Harvard Graduate School of Design, where I am studying how cities can grow with equity at the center. This experience is shaping the kind of leadership I hope to bring into the years ahead.
3. We supported Virgil Abloh Foundation’sABLOH AIR mentorship to help young creatives step into spaces with no limits!
4. We continue to support development partners like @growgreaterenglewood w/ more than 12 million dollars in 2025 grants aligned with community vision.
5. 44 by @BronzevilleWinery, Our women-made wine reached U.S. soil. We launch in 2026.
6. Radical Hospitality Through @bronzevillewinery, @thestakeouttaos , and clients like @MVacationProperties w/ homes across Northern New Mexico + & @StJamesHotel
7. Continued Youth Mentorship and Pathway building thru our IAYV INC philanthropic community development arm w/ nonprofit partners
8. ETHOLA
Helped to advance design , development and secure predev funding for an incredible project in West Pullman
9. Won a Community Neighborhood Development Award for @SouthSideSanctuary, an ode to our collaborators and neighbors who shape the space every day.
10. @TheNascentGroup studio grows through partnership rooted in culture, equity, and ownership. We rise when we build together.
Looking ahead
In 2026, we continue the work with intention, advancing an eco resort project, and honoring joy, rest, and friendship as part of the practice.
