I want to begin by expressing my deep gratitude to the @harvardgsd Graduate School of Design, the @loebfellows Fellowship, and the @harvarddivinity School &Rural GSD for allowing me to create space to center Indigenous voices in a conversation about the care and design of rural landscapes
We should not design without these voices . Full Stop

Indigenous perspectives must remain a nonnegotiable when we think about stewardship, land, and our collective responsibility to place as a foundational value .
(also, unpopular opinion, a land acknowledgment by itself is not enough)
We had the privilege of hearing from Midnight Lujan, whose work across creative writing, film, and fashion reminds us that storytelling is a powerful form of authorship, of protection, and of cultural continuity. Her insights, shaped in part by her studies with the @instituteofamericanindianarts , challenged us to think critically about who holds narrative power and how that power is exercised.

We were also guided by Heather Dorries from the Centre for Indigenous Studies at @uoft University of Toronto , whose work helped us interrogate the perceived divide between urban and rural landscapes. She invited us to consider how that distinction is often constructed, and how we might begin to engage more responsibly as allies in the planning and design of land that has always held deeper histories and relationships.

This conversation is deeply personal to me. It sits at the core of how I think about design, development, and responsibility. I am grateful to have moderated the stage with such thoughtful voices, and to be part of an institution willing to hold space for these necessary and, at times, challenging conversations.

The weekend as a whole brought together an extraordinary group of speakers and perspectives. I look forward to continuing those conversations and building connections with the broader community that gathered over these past few days.

please check out their work, follow them and support
Request more conversations like this wherever you may be
And check out the throwback Of Midnight and Ifrom 2019 🥰 #rideordie

To say that I am humbled by being honored as a 2026 The Chicago Defender Woman of Excellence is a vast understatement. Thank you @iam2dy4 Dyanna Knight Lewis and the @chicagodefenderteam.

The evening, the fellowship, and the encouragement to continue in service to my community served as a much needed moment of encouragement, an ignition even! Becuase it;s hard when the needle doesn’t move as fast or as easily as we would like it to.

The evening was a call to lead fearlessly, to remain humble, and to lean on my incredible peers.

These awards are given not for what we do, but for who we are. After sitting surrounded by women who fight for momentum and change every day, just like I do, I am feeling justified and so deeply loved.

To be honored and mentioned in the same breath as women like @melodyspanncooper , who received the Lifetime Achievement Award, @toisalter , named Woman of the Year, and @deemrobinson1 , accepting the so deserved Vanguard Award, gives me the leeway to know there is still more to come and even bigger shoes to fill. I am blown away. As they encouraged, I will continue to take up space.

But, my favorite moment shows just how important Divine Intervention can be. I had the honor to sit next to and bask in the excellence of Bishop Shirley Coleman. We engaged in “light conversation” about challenging homelessness reform, advocacy, and community development.

For a moment, I felt like I had “my” family in the room even though I didn’t. For a moment, I didn’t feel the “achievement loneliness” that comes when you receive an award and then go home alone to quietly set it on the shelf. A special thank you for “adopting me” for the evening, Bishop Shirley Coleman & @stephaniedcoleman . Thank you for sharing your special moment with me and for ensuring I felt your love and God’s Purpose. It is something I will forever be grateful for and will never forget.

I cannot wait to engage my new Chicago Defender Women of Excellence fam, to celebrate them, to create moments of encouragement, and to continue to create momentum in the city we love.

A few months left at my fellowship at@harvardgsd @loebfellows … im coming out full throttle ♥️

Thank you.

Thank you.

This year, our collective work welcomed 65,000 people, supported minority owned small businesses, helped secure more than $15 million dollars in grants for community projects, and produced more than $30 million dollars in capital for small businesses nationwide. None of this happened alone. It happened because people chose to use business as a force for good (and because my team doesn’t F around)

1. At @southsidesanctuarychi we turned vacant land into belonging for 25,000 visitors and 5,000+ youth, while supporting 500+ small businesses, reducing reported crime with1000 feet by 30% and increasing local business revenue by 25%. A blueprint for activating empty public owned plazas and activating space in cities .

2. I was selected to attend Harvard for a year as a Loeb Fellow at the Harvard Graduate School of Design, where I am studying how cities can grow with equity at the center. This experience is shaping the kind of leadership I hope to bring into the years ahead.

3. We supported Virgil Abloh Foundation’sABLOH AIR mentorship to help young creatives step into spaces with no limits!

4. We continue to support development partners like @growgreaterenglewood w/ more than 12 million dollars in 2025 grants aligned with community vision.

5. 44 by @BronzevilleWinery, Our women-made wine reached U.S. soil. We launch in 2026.

6. Radical Hospitality Through @bronzevillewinery, @thestakeouttaos , and clients like @MVacationProperties w/ homes across Northern New Mexico + & @StJamesHotel

7. Continued Youth Mentorship and Pathway building thru our IAYV INC philanthropic community development arm w/ nonprofit partners

8. ETHOLA
Helped to advance design , development and secure predev funding for an incredible project in West Pullman

9. Won a Community Neighborhood Development Award for @SouthSideSanctuary, an ode to our collaborators and neighbors who shape the space every day.

10. @TheNascentGroup studio grows through partnership rooted in culture, equity, and ownership. We rise when we build together.

Looking ahead
In 2026, we continue the work with intention, advancing an eco resort project, and honoring joy, rest, and friendship as part of the practice.

City Building Means Everyone

I spent two days at Harvard’s @harvard_jchs Beyond Shelter Deep Dive with leaders who are rethinking how cities respond to homelessness. Listening to public health experts, policy makers, business leaders, researchers, and people with lived experience reminded me that city building is collective work. No single sector can carry it alone.

Denver’s All In Mile High model stayed with me. More than 7,000 people have come inside from the streets and over 5,500 are now in permanent housing. This happened through coordinated engagement, micro communities, hotel conversions, and real behavioral health support. @denvermayor Mike Johnston walked me through the strategy, and the clarity of his approach is powerful. (Idk what the heck I was talking about during this picture to make@my mouth look like this !) 🤣🤣🤣 I think we were talking about he and @chicagosmayor being brothers from other mothers !!! lol

I left convinced that business has a role. @amazon ‘s investment in affordable housing and the @uschamber focus on workforce inclusion show what can shift when employers invest in people and place. Housing supply is essential. Innovation in modular design is real. And care is infrastructure.

Cities cannot do this alone. Robin Zeigler’s work at MURAL demonstrates what intentional mixed-use, mixed-income communities can look like when affordability is part of the design, not an afterthought.

The path forward is simple. Governments, businesses, universities, nonprofits, and communities must move together. Everyone has a part in building cities rooted in safety, stability, and dignity.

City building means everyone.

What happens when global designers, healers, and storytellers gather in one room? Abundance. ✨✨✨

I’m still carrying the impact of @massdesigngroup ‘s Abundant Futures gathering at the @icaboston.
Every moment pushed me to widen my sense of responsibility and sharpen my imagination for the world we’re shaping.

@gibsonregi reminded us that design must return to humanity. @jhadamazi ‘s work in public memory expanded my understanding of justice. Mohamed Ali Diini named the economic tax of unhealed trauma with a clarity I’ll be thinking about for a long time. And meeting William Kamkwamba , whose windmill design changed the trajectory of a community and inspired a generation of engineers , was unforgettable. (Still fangirling )

The conversations on wellbeing, belonging, and preservation align deeply with our teams work at The Nascent Group and my year with the @loebfellows fellowship the @harvardgsd , as we design community rooted spaces and rethink corridor investment with care at the center.

MASS is building a movement grounded in equity, memory, and regenerative design. If you were in the room, you felt it.

For those thinking about the future of our cities and our communities: what responsibility do you believe design holds right now?

Thank you Mass ❤️

It was an incredible 2 days spent being a part the 2025 @bsaaia Boston Society for Architecture Housing Innovation Symposium, where architects, planners, and policymakers gathered to explore how design can drive equity in the face of financial, regulatory, and climate constraints.

One of the most impactful sessions for me was “Financing: Collaborative Homeownership and Local Financing Innovations,” where Paige Roosa from the @mayorwu Housing Innovation Lab and Karen Rebazafrom The Boston Home Center talked through work reframed financing not as a barrier but as a design tool that can unlock new pathways to ownership and community wealth.

As I continue refining my anti-displacement model through my @loebfellows at @harvardgsd , conversations like these deepen my understanding of how equitable corridor development can emerge when small business, housing, and policy move together. In the past, I viewed these elements as pieces of a puzzle, when in reality they are cogs of the same wheel, each one essential to creating sustained, inclusive growth. This journey is so inspiring!!! ❤️‍🔥 🧠

Thanks to BSA SPACE for allowing me to be surrounded by practitioners and thinkers who see design as infrastructure for justice. Massachusetts continues to set a national tone for what is possible when creativity meets civic will.

Also Will Cohen, AICP from the City of Boston Planning Department - was the first person in my career who Ive ever seen make a presentation about zoning entertaining, lol !!! Def bringing this back to Chicago!

Excited that that our amazing Real Estate Development Intern, Elisheba Harvey, represented our team at The Nascent Group at this year’s DDC | Formerly @diversedevelopers .

Ellie came back energized and full of insights that will strengthen how we support clients and projects around the country. She even had the chance to connect with one of our clients and the 🐐 of real estate from LA to Chicago , @jamessellsla. Who knew there would be a @spelman_college @morehouse1867 connection waiting there?

DDC25 reminded us why this work matters. From dawn until dusk, the day centered on something we care deeply about: keys to ownership in our own communities. The conversations went far beyond development. They challenged us to reimagine what equity can look like when we share knowledge, build together, and open the doors of access for others.

Hosted by the incredible Katrina L. Malone, the conference brought together hundreds of developers, investors, and civic leaders to explore new models for turning vision into financing and partnerships into lasting impact. The sessions reflected many of the values that guide our work, including designing regenerative, communityled projects that create real pathways to ownership and long-term sustainability.

A huge shoutout to Kemena Brooks, Phylicia Manley, and Rob Rose for the panels everyone is still talking about. Your insight and leadership continue to push the conversation forward in powerful ways. I appreciate yall!

Counting down the days until we return as a full team for DDC26 next year.

Excited to join Black in Design 2025 Saturday, November 8, from 3:00 to 4:30 PM for “Grounds of Inheritance: Land, Law, and Sovereignties.”

I am grateful to share my insights in community development and urban designand alllllllll the things that come along with it along with my team’s work at The Nascent Group and meet some incredible folks in the field so we can refill our souls and be inspired by the greatness of those designing andbuilding community from around the world.

This year’s theme, “Black Roots: Grounded and Growing Toward Collective Futures,” explores how design connects lineage, land, and lore across the diaspora, asking what persists, what is possible, and what must be designed differently.

I am especially looking forward to exploring Ancestral Fabrications with Euneika Rogers Sipp, Ashia Ajani, and Ifé Franklin, Blueprints for Liberation with Yolande Daniels, Boston Liberation Center, and Dorchester Art Project, and the Saturday keynote with Princess Adedoyin Talabi Faniyi.

Join us in Cambridge for a weekend of learning, reflection, and visioning the future of design.
Tickets and full schedule at the link in the stories blackindesign.org/black-in-design-2025/2025-speakers-workshops/
