Exhibition announcement: Not Hollows by Joe Moss

~~~~~~
We’re thrilled to share our next show ‘Not Hollows’, a new installation by Joe Moss, opening next Thursday, 21 May, 6-9pm and run between 22.5 - 21.6.26.
At the center of this new sculptural installation, a group of palm-sized, tethered drones in an indeterminate state of hovering, exist in a suspended moment of encounter between semi-autonomous systems and speculative imaginaries.
We are not accustomed to being so close to drones. To some degree, we might feel like we already understand drones. On the one hand, through operational networks and systems of control, some deliver goods or deliver death, while another understanding grasps them through increasingly speculative fictions and theories alike, even already imagining them as fully conscious entities.
‘Not Hollows’ uses the gallery to carve out a duration, one of extended suspension, that sits in the unstable space between those two ideas, the uncertain territory where these technologies currently exist. We ascribe something to the drone, something that comes from us, that they may or may not have, and that is very complicated. Over time, that space will only become more complicated.
Last weekend to catch ‘Our Ghosts, Our Shells (Delux)’ by David Blandy & Petra Szemán!! We’re open Friday & Sat12-6pm and Sunday 12-4pm. Curated by Rebecca Edwards
….‘I’m already mildly exhausted from my 24/7 LARP as a human’….
Alter egos are often used to describe a concealed or contrasting side of a person’s personality, but in the case of playable characters in Our Ghosts, Our Shells, these alter egos are imbued with a sense of sincerity. Existing in a state of perpetual becoming — both ghost and vessel — they’re never fully whole but never entirely detached. Departing from a strictly biographical narrative, the game probes sentimentality, self-construction, and the online lived experiences that often remain suppressed.
Save the date 👀 Very excited to present David Blandy and Petra Szemán’s collaboration Our Ghosts, Our Shells (Deluxe), at Chemist, Curated by Rebecca Edwards
Opening Thursday 19th March, 2026, 6-9pm
Our Ghosts, Our Shells (Deluxe) re-presents Our Ghosts, Our Shells (Endgame), the conclusion of a year-long collaborative project by Petra Szemán and David Blandy bridging the realms of identity and selfhood, reality and simulation, and experience and fantasy.
In an era when identities are increasingly fragmented across digital landscapes, Our Ghosts, Our Shells questions how we reconcile our dispersed selves within today’s techno-political milieu. By opening and mending the cracks between player/world and character/creator, the work challenges the nature of agency and identity across platforms of existence.
We’re excited to share that we received @aceagrams funding for our next artistic programme!
Running from May 2026 to February 2027, curated with @_rebeccca.edwards, the “Conversations with AI” programme presents new commissions, events and educational outreach focussing on the broad impacts AI has on cultural psyche, local and global politics, generational techno-culture, artistic workflows and outputs, and shifts from linguistic expression toward machine-mediated forms of communication.
We’re thrilled to be working with Joe Moss @joemoss1, dmstfctn @dmstfctn, Chris MacInnes @stickyvectors and Most Dismal Swamp @most_dismal_swamp across the programme, as well as many other artists, theorists, and technologists in our expanded programme. Running adjacently, events include a symposium on the Weaponisation of AI, a film screening, a public reading group expanding our research, and integrated exhibition workshops and talks.
This iteration of “Conversations with AI” builds on our previous work with Felicity Hammond, Phillip Speakman, Daniel Shanken, Andrea Khôra, Jake Elwes, and Amina Abbas-Nazari to interrogate the boundaries of these practices using the idea of the conversation – between practitioners, within communities, and between computational and human intelligence –as a framework for exploring how AI is reshaping cultural production, perception, and collective understanding.
We’re thrilled to present Metronome, a new performance by artist William Joys at CHEMIST, which will take place on the 31st January 7:00pm and 1st February 4:00pm.
Metronome delves into the thick boundaries of visual art and live performance, interrogating both as a formal device and as a vehicle for political and personal liberation.
Drawing inspiration from the radical aesthetics of the 1920s Bauhaus movement, Joys explores the ironies inherent in legacies of mid-century performance art in relation to method acting. The gallery transforms into an active participant in a tightly paced, mechanical choreography, employing an intricate interplay of music, sound, light, speech, costume, sculpture and movement.
Featuring performers
@clovisvosser, @l__schuller, and @stellapearcestudio with music by @11schnull & lighting by @kunstraumlondon
With an accompanying text by @nicolettalambertucci
Running time approximately 45 minutes, please arrive promptly.
Tickets 10.5£, link in bio.
Please note that we want to make this show as inclusive as possible, so if you face any barriers to purchasing a ticket, please email info@chemistgallery.com
Graphic design: @oliverlong_
Photograph: Matthew Noel-Tod
William Joys channels characters which arouse suspicion about the endorsement of authenticity over ‘artificial’ construction. He performs through layers of subterfuge, becoming an object which embodies the prop, the stage, the costume, in order to promote the art of actressing. He has exhibited and performed at Glasgow International, Strangefield, Modern Institute, David Dale Gallery, Kunsthalle Münster and Kunstverein Harburger Bahnhof, Germany, Kunstraum, London, The Legal Stage, London, MIT List Centre USA, MUMOK, Vienna, Museum Ludwig Cologne.
With upcoming performances at Bolding Gallery and The Claude Cahun Festival (with Stella Pearce). He is a founding member of Villa Design Group and one half of performance and publishing platform Sartre25. He is currently part of the Conditions Studio Programme, Croydon.
🟦Explore the archives in Felicity Hammond's 'V:4 Repository', exhibiting at Stills now until 7 February 2026.
Before this exhibition travelled up to Scotland, Felicity created V3.5: Failure to Converge;an imaginary storage facility dedicated to the comprehensive processing of ‘Variations’.
In the weeks leading up to V4 at Stills, Felicity spent time at @chemist.gallery, mapping, sorting and classifying the project’s many components. Artworks, test prints, leftover materials, digital files, emails, and other project footprints were all inspected and logged to create a comprehensive inventory of every item featured each exhibition so far.
