1D is a line. 2D is a shape. But as a character artist, my job is to convince your eyes that this flat surface is actually 3D.
Most people stop at a base color, but the soul of the painting lives in the layers of shading.
When I’m building depth, I’m not just blending colors; I’m mapping out how light wraps around the form. For this piece, I’m focusing on facial characteristics to push the contrast.
If you look closely at the carousel I posted yesterday, you can see where the warm midtones meet the cool shadows, that’s where the 3d POP happens.
