Instagram Story Save

This painting, She Gets It Straight from the Source, presents a symbolic narrative of spiritual seeking in the 21st Century. I worked life size and incorporated the uncanny color and architecture of medieval art—which is my current art history obsession.

This is a little gouache study of the marble fabrication building next door to my studio. My studio is in a beautiful 100-year-old showroom and office of a marble company, @candoromarblebuilding, and is home to my Knoxville art family, @tristar_arts.

When my daughter was twelve, I wanted to paint her surrounded by some symbols of growth and hope and love. The cat in the painting, Gypsy, was a soul cat to her (and me). Now that she is fifteen, I am so glad that I have this painting of her from this precious age when a child sits in the precipice of growing up.

Sometimes Snakes Get In is a painting I made when I was thinking about ideas of acceptance and equinimity—feelings which I find to be a bit of a balancing act sometimes.

This painting, Mary and Her Demons Are Totally Fine, presents a 21st Century interpretation of Mary Magdalene from the Christian tradition.

I am currently trying to figure out a few fun things in the studio!
How to work large (for me!)?!
How to incorporate background and figure (a constant struggle!)?
How to mix skintones (@patriciawatwood, I have decided I need to see you paint IRL for this one)?!
Tons more to learn, but I am loving these questions whenever I make it over to the lovely @candoromarblebuilding these days.

This is one of my master studies—it is a small and quick study after Berthe Morisot, one of the less well-known Impressionist painters. Morisot wanted to focus on her art and thought not having children would allow her that time; however, when her daughter Julie came along, Morisot found a lifelong muse and inspiration.
