Well it’s been a little over two years since I got this console so I thought it was high time to learn to mix with it (not just record). Instead of fucking up someone else’s song I used one of my own ambient tracks as a Guinea pig, and oh boy was it fun

It all went much quicker than I thought it would, and by the end I was making the types of creative moves I would have never arrived at just clicking around on a computer. Since the music was a bit odd I let myself do stuff that messed with the composition a bit (using the console EQ to create a resonant spike which I moved around and sent into reverb for example). It’s all really fun and makes me wanna do more, maybe eventually with your song!

I guess analog mixing is much more athletic than in the box mixing, who knew?

Five years ago I started doing live session videos with @cart_music and since then I’ve gotten to meet and work with so many amazing bands and artists. For the 5th anniversary I thought a celebration was in order, so I put together a “mixtape” of 60 songs (one for each month I guess) from the sessions over the years. These are some (but not all!) of my favorite songs I’ve gotten to record for Cart.

This video is just two seconds of each song, hopefully enough to make you wanna go listen to the full versions. Also, anyone who can name every band/ artist just from this clip wins a free day of studio time

There’s a sense of fun that these folks brought to the studio that I think can really be heard on these recordings, but the record also has some more delicate moments as well as some real darkness. Why record a vocal with one mic when you could record it with two?

Sometimes a blend between the two mics is just what’s needed

Sometimes we don’t have time to find the best mic for the vocalist, they wanna sing NOW. So you gotta cover your bases in case the one mic you thought would be best lets you down. I feel like our tube mic is amazing for a lot of people but doesn’t quite do it for others. On the other hand everyone sounds good through a 441

Other times the song has drastically different sections (like a screamed chorus and a melodic verse) each of which sound better on different mics

Sometimes the vocalist wants to jump back and forth between lead vocals and backing vocal layers. Often it’s a good idea to record backing vocals on a different mic from your lead vocal (helps the lead stand out) so having both up and ready saves lots of time

Sometimes vocalists get self conscious if they hear the super HD sound of their own voice through a condenser mic in the headphones, so letting them hear a slightly less detailed mic (even if the condenser is what you’re going with for the recording) is nice

Whatever the case may be, if you’re recording onto a computer and have the channels and mics for it, it always feels like a good call to throw up a second mic, it can solve a lot of problems, and quickly!

These two mics are our Sennheiser 441, and Pearlman TM1. Two amazing mics for vocals, with very different components and very different tonal qualities

The centerpiece of our studio is a vintage Neotek series II (originally owned by Jackson Browne). Honestly I was more excited about the fact that its previous owners were @headroomphiladelphia seeing as they’ve made some of my favorite records ever

Thanks to the legendary console tech James (idk his last name but if you need some gear fixed I will connect you because he’s the best) we have 24 great sounding channels on this thing. It allows us to work fast and do cool stuff with sound, what more could you ask for
