who are we, if we’re not us?
london the past week, from the phone out of context. also.. been completely made to feel so at home amongst this community.. really cannot express how emo it makes me to be able to step foot in a new city and be looked after like i’ve been here. never been much of a “london guy” but this past week has changed that. thank you dearly.
#bycarlnard
ps.. you’re note more locked in than me.

THE MARATHON DOESN’T LOVE YOU BACK.
so many of us, wake up on a random day in the middle of the week, 16 weeks or so ahead of a specific day on the calendar. from then on, we spend so much of life working towards a day that 50,000+ are also working towards. we work a job only to use that money towards new shoes, gels, apparel.. more meals than the previous 16 weeks.. we do this because we’ve done it before and we love the marathon.
but the whole time, we do so while lying to ourselves that the love is mutual.. but it’s time we face reality. the marathon does not love us back.
the marathon, literally has convinced us to run faster with every mile or kilometer so we can show we had “negative splits” on an app we pay money for.. the marathon gives people the reality check of a bad back half of the race. the marathon makes you wake up 5 hours before you even start.. the marathon doesn’t love some of us so much it literally makes sure people know you DNF’d. hell.. the marathon is so mean it even let someone in their marathon debut break the once believed unimaginable, 2 hour barrier in the race… only to COME IN SECOND PLACE!
so why do we give so much of us to the thing that actively tries to give us nothing? because the best love is the love we fight for. the love we fight for is the love we know is worth having. love with no fight is not love, it’s lust.. and lust fades.
it’s not worth it to try and convince the marathon to love you back.. but it is worth fighting for the thing you love. it is worth the 5am wake-ups, the nerves, the anticipation.. the best kind of love is the feeling of guessing.. and race day is the biggest guessing game.
and no one could have guessed that @londonmarathon would give us the kind of day we had yesterday.. perhaps a wink that maybe the marathon may not love us, but loves that we try again and again?
here’s to love and here’s to trying. congrats to everyone out there yesterday. we love you all so much. 💙

so why do we give so much of us to the thing that actively tries to give us nothing? because the best love is the love we fight for. the love we fight for is the love we know is worth having. love with no fight is not love, it’s lust.. and lust fades.
it’s not worth it to try and convince the marathon to love you back.. but it is worth fighting for the thing you love. it is worth the 5am wake-ups, the nerves, the anticipation.. the best kind of love is the feeling of guessing.. and race day is the biggest guessing game.
and no one could have guessed that @londonmarathon would give us the kind of day we had yesterday.. perhaps a wink that maybe the marathon may not love us, but loves that we try again and again?
here’s to love and here’s to trying. congrats to everyone out there yesterday. we love you all so much. 💙

THE MARATHON DOESN’T LOVE YOU BACK.
so many of us, wake up on a random day in the middle of the week, 16 weeks or so ahead of a specific day on the calendar. from then on, we spend so much of life working towards a day that 50,000+ are also working towards. we work a job only to use that money towards new shoes, gels, apparel.. more meals than the previous 16 weeks.. we do this because we’ve done it before and we love the marathon.
but the whole time, we do so while lying to ourselves that the love is mutual.. but it’s time we face reality. the marathon does not love us back.

what a special feeling it is to document the race day of so many incredible women and to do so in london on such a historic day made it even more special. this sport will never cease to amaze me and these women continue to inspire us all every single race day. thanks for the space and support to continue this series. it’s quite literally my favorite thing about race day. ☺️✨💙

RUN IF BY LAND, TWO BY RELAY | THE PAUL REVERE CLASSIC
on the eve of the Boston Marathon, a group of runners from @lostboystrackclub @bricklayersunion @lakewoodandcompany, w/ support from @maurten_official @suunto & banditrunning - take on the marathon course in relay fashion.
this year they built two teams, one women’s team & a men’s team. the goal? rip as fast as humanly possible. this race, now a few years old, is not so much of an event as it is a celebration of the race, the sport of running and a deep passion to rip the course for the love of the game.
big love to all involved, and thank you @benjaminweingart for the invite to document this year. love to @timrossi @kgunaa @jkh_photo and everyone involved.

boston makes me cry.
i’ve been feeling heavy in the heart since the @bostonmarathon ended. to be quite honest, i never understood the hype.. perhaps because i had never experienced it. but i’m all in now. i get…thinking about it makes me want to cry and reliving these moments in fact did make me cry. so now, we can cry about boston together. enjoy.
thank you, boston.

the marathon wants you to quit but the heart won’t let you.
as i sat and thought about the boston marathon ahead of photographing it for the first time, i couldn’t help but hold back tears thinking about the endless stories of each and everyone’s “why” - there’s someone out there running for a loved one who can’t. for a cause the believe in. someone running because someone else on that very course broke their heart, doubted them.. some run for pleasure and some run for the pain.. all the while, no one runs to quit…
there is a beauty that only race day can provide.. it’s a reminder of your internal pain.. it’s a race against your self doubt.. it’s an exercise is fighting the battle of “i quit.” - for a few hours on the day.. it’s you against the rest of your life.. it’s the fight back from injury, it’s the reminder of how far you’ve come..
the whole time, every mile marker is telling you to quit… but as each one passes, their strength weakens.. the higher the number, the lower their chances of taking you down.. you cannot let the marathon win. you cannot give the marathon the chance to say “i told you so!”
as you cross the start line of the marathon, you enter a dark place… and for so many, it’s a cave.. but if you refuse to give up.. if you tell yourself to go instead of quit, that cave becomes a tunnel… and you reach that light at the finish line.
the marathon beckons for you to say “i can’t.” but you can… and you did. and we’re all so proud of you..

as you cross the start line of the marathon, you enter a dark place… and for so many, it’s a cave.. but if you refuse to give up.. if you tell yourself to go instead of quit, that cave becomes a tunnel… and you reach that light at the finish line.
the marathon beckons for you to say “i can’t.” but you can… and you did. and we’re all so proud of you..

the marathon wants you to quit but the heart won’t let you.
as i sat and thought about the boston marathon ahead of photographing it for the first time, i couldn’t help but hold back tears thinking about the endless stories of each and everyone’s “why” - there’s someone out there running for a loved one who can’t. for a cause the believe in. someone running because someone else on that very course broke their heart, doubted them.. some run for pleasure and some run for the pain.. all the while, no one runs to quit…

YEARBOOK. some thoughts on the series by carlnard.
we’re gonna talk about this more on sunstack and in this past weeks youtube but in the interest in not asking for too much of any one persons time.. i thought it be nice to share some thoughts here..
one of things that as “YEARBOOK” took shape started to come to me, was this idea of “remove the noise” - highlight the runner without the crowd, remove the environment, no confetti.. which i know i know its ironic… i’ve made a name for myself in some regard for it but can we create a story without any additional aspects.. ?
i started to think about my own marathon training.. how so much of it has just been war between the weather and myself.. a cold dark winter, a battle of “who wants it more?” within myself. was i going to let another winter be the excuse i used as to why i didnt do the thing i told my friends i would do?
then that lead to the position of the backdrop, studying the area, knowing the light would shine on the runners, a chance to again play with light and allow for this metaphor of accomplishment be in the background.. “i’ve run this race, i made it out of winter, now it’s time to shine.” - it was important to me to highlight the role weather plays a factor on race day.
every aspect of this series was thought about and every part of it was meant to do something net new out of love and respect for the community and world of running.. i’ve been documenting running for a decade. i don’t want to repeat the past, i want to shine a light on the sports future.

every aspect of this series was thought about and every part of it was meant to do something net new out of love and respect for the community and world of running.. i’ve been documenting running for a decade. i don’t want to repeat the past, i want to shine a light on the sports future.

YEARBOOK. some thoughts on the series by carlnard.
we’re gonna talk about this more on sunstack and in this past weeks youtube but in the interest in not asking for too much of any one persons time.. i thought it be nice to share some thoughts here..
one of things that as “YEARBOOK” took shape started to come to me, was this idea of “remove the noise” - highlight the runner without the crowd, remove the environment, no confetti.. which i know i know its ironic… i’ve made a name for myself in some regard for it but can we create a story without any additional aspects.. ?
