Hello there! ✨
I created this account as a centralized space to share my work, amplify other journalists and nerd out about the current events that interest me.
I’m a writer, but I’ve also produced long- and short-form video for newsrooms. I also report in Spanish!
I cover immigration in Chicago, but my career started in 2016 focused on the U.S.–Mexico border in Arizona, where I grew up. I’ve since taught through COVID-19, covered education as a graduate student in investigative journalism, and reported on climate change in the Southwest and environmental justice in Chicago. Basically: I’ve covered critical issues at critical moments.
Thanks for being here and for caring about this work.

¡Hola! ✨
Básicamente: he cubierto temas críticos en momentos críticos.

Tens of thousands of people rallied across Chicago and marched to Union Park to celebrate International Workers’ Day, known as May Day, on Friday. This year marks the 140th anniversary of a strike in Haymarket Square that sparked the movement that led to the eight-hour workday.
While the day is celebrated every year in Chicago to support labor rights, many took the opportunity to broaden support beyond labor to include immigration issues.
The calls for action during the march come amid heightened immigration enforcement over the past year.
Many called for defunding and the abolishing of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), funding towards communities of color and prioritizing workers over billionaires.

Cook County’s immigration unit has grown since it began five years ago, adding more public defenders to represent detained people as detentions surged the past year under the Trump administration.
It’s now part of 70 government-backed programs across the country providing free legal representation in immigration court.
A decade ago, only three programs like it existed.
