It’s the end of the year family. The end of a momentous chapter.

And we’re taking a moment to appreciate where we’re standing…kiss the earth as they say, and reflect on how the much the journey has transformed us.

AYITI KA’P JERE’L (“Haiti will manage it” in Haitian Kreyòl) was a presentation-style event we held at The Shoppe on the last evening of Black History Month, Feb 28th.

We, Byas & Leon, are first generation Haitian Americans y’all—and had long wanted to demonstrate how Haitian history (pre-colonial to the Haitian Revolution and beyond) is significantly woven into Black American history, as well as within the history of the Americas overall.

So we did that :) We created roughly 20 slides, doing our very best to form a cohesive, logical chain that highlights and displays these relationships. Lemme be clear: we aren’t scholars with doctorates over here OKAY lmao—the material (and the people/moments it covers) is by no means an exhaustive account and we’ll for sure be adding to it/modifying it over time. But our hope is that it sparks a desire to go deeper and to learn more on your own 🕯️
