I woke up thinking about this past Christmas when we when we serendipitously discovered your mother’s (my grandmother’s) history in Arce, Italy 🇮🇹 We thought that we were just going to walk around the town, but our incredible guide @romewithsusanna started chatting to the locals in true Italian form.Within the hour we found ourselves meeting with the mayor and digging through records to find Nanni’s birth certificate, parent’s records, and the home she grew up in before coming to the US. She was an amazing woman who passed on all of her beauty and grace to you, Mom. What a wild and emotional journey that was. I’m so lucky to have experienced that with you.

New work on the cover of today’s @nytimes food section that I can take very little credit for!@allichin ordered the bagels (and schmears not pictured) with my Amex after we discussed it. 🥯 @andrew.bui moved them around until we were all happy. And then we all ate bagels for breakfast!

Guest host takeover!

@bwashbu is running the show today and brought along his friend @irenewongi to grab her go-to sandwich, and let’s just say… it’s a veggie sandwich with meat.

We headed to All’Antico Vinaio for the LA BROADWAY: pistachio cream, stracciatella, sun-dried tomato, spicy zucchini, arugula… and then Irene made it her own — swapping the cream and adding prosciutto. Because why not?

It’s rich, fresh, spicy, creamy — all packed into that signature focaccia that’s somehow crispy on the outside and perfectly soft and chewy on the inside. A massive sandwich that absolutely lives up to the hype.

For the pairing, David picked out Calea Nero d’Avola for them — a southern Italian red that brings just the right amount of dark fruit and spice to stand up to all those bold flavors. Easy, balanced, and exactly what you want with a sandwich like this.

Irene’s been working in food television since 1999, so she knows what she’s talking about, and this order proves it.

The best part about being friends with @bwashbu ? He always knows the best spots.

This time he took us to Essex Pearl, where @chefdaniel.le is serving what might be the best lobster roll I’ve ever had. And I don’t say that lightly.

A warm, buttered roll packed with juicy claw and knuckle meat (the sweetest parts), layered with Southeast Asian flavors — think nuoc cham, cilantro, red chilies, crispy shallots — all tucked into perfectly toasted brioche. Rich, bright, a little spicy, a little tangy… it completely blew my mind.

For the pairing, we went with DeLille Chaleur Blanc, a Bordeaux-style blend from Washington State (Sauvignon Blanc + Sémillon). The Sauvignon Blanc brings freshness and lift, while the Sémillon adds just enough texture and weight to match the sweetness of the lobster without overpowering it.

This is one of those pairings where everything just clicks. Flavor, texture, balance — all working together.

An absolutely delicious lunch and a reminder that sometimes the best meals come from trusting your friends.
