20 years ago I left college before graduation and moved to LA to take my chances on that old safe bet, the music industry. @thehotelcafe was the first scene I blindly stumbled into and it was like striking gold. In the midst of the sprawling LA landscape, four blocks from my first apartment, I found this tiny but mighty wellspring tucked away in a Hollywood back alley.

It was a magical time, though I wouldn’t fully appreciate this until much, much later. For the next 10 years, if I wasn’t on tour, I was there. Work disguised as hangs, hangs disguised as work. If my 20s were a movie they could shoot most of it with a Hotel Cafe set. It was the most fun I’ve ever had and I never want to do it again.

So many talented artists and musicians working stuff out on stage and in back rooms (and often back on stage after hours). Folks who had a few things figured out and the rest of us who were still on the journey. I learned more about life and music and how to navigate the world from my time there than anywhere else.

Last weekend we threw our celebration of life party for The Hotel Cafe on Cahuenga blvd. That place that took us all in and gave us community. It was a beautiful reunion and one more chance to play on that stage and sing along to some of my favorite songs with old friends and musical heroes.

Thanks to the Mayor of the Hotel Cafe, @carybrothers for putting the night together and always taking me along for the ride. Playing Everybody Wants to Rule the World with Curt Smith is up there with things 21 year old Brandon would never have imagined. Thanks to Max and Marko — you built it and everyone came. Love ya Gia, James, Dan and Dan and everyone else

About to hop back out on tour which means it’s probably time to post about the last one.

Earlier this spring we did a 10yr anniversary tour for @lordhuron’s record, Strange Trails. It was especially meaningful for yours truly because it marked my 10th year touring with the band, capped off with our 10th show at Red Rocks.

A lot has transpired this past decade, both on and off the stage. It blurs into one mysterious, winding road. Too vast to summarize, so I won’t bother.

What I can say, with full conviction, is that it’s been a great honor helping create all the worlds this band conjures up and I’m so thankful for all the folks that have slung through our orbit. In that spirit here’s a dump of somewhat recent and recently ancient photos.

Catch ya on down the trail

The Oscars today seems like a good excuse to throw it back to when I was in a Dylan cover band with some legendary players and @tchalamet as our lead singer

The first couple songs from A Complete Unknown are out in the world. So fun getting to play Mike Bloomfield’s iconic electric guitar parts on this project alongside a bunch of heavy hitters. Huge thanks to @nicholaibaxter & @wyldstallyonz for putting us all in a room together for this.

Two of the days we recorded, @tchalamet swung by the studio to work on his Dylan vocal and blew us all away. Excited to see the movie when it comes out on Christmas Day!
