Today my East African journey comes to an end. It was as very humbling experience that includes tears being shed, but also the glory and work of God being shown. The poverty across Burundi and Uganda is very real but also drastically different between the two. In Burundi about 75% of the population lives in poverty. They work all day to scrape up enough money for some rice and beans. Many have no shoes and live in hand made homes out of whatever scraps they can put together. From the dump to the top of Mount Mukiki all you can see is people fighting for survival. Since the Civil War that start in the 90s the Batwa people were banished to infertile land all across east Africa and treated as animals. Claude and others such as @gueritashook have spent theirs lives to help these people be recognized as people again. They have opened a Porridge factory that helps kids and mothers get the nutrients they need. One cup a porridge a day, helps children double their weight in just 3 months. Since the start of 2020, the first Batwa ever to in the presidential cabinet appointed as “Minister of National Solidarity” HER job is to be an advocate for the Batwa tribe and help them be recognized as HUMANS again. They are slowing building back their society with still many struggles that they will have to face. One thing is for sure is that Jesus is on their side. The tribes build the most beautiful churches from nothing. Just clay bricks. They are also creating schools so many Batwa children will be the first to attend university. Yves the boy I am holding is 5 years old. I can’t wait to watch him grow as I return to Burundi. All humans should be treated with equal rights no matter the tribe, skin color, or beliefs.
